World’s largest connected radio telescope expands into Ireland

Ireland has been chosen as the site for latest expansion of the world’s largest connected radio telescope. The Ireland-LOFAR consortium (I-LOFAR) has been awarded grants totaling €1.9 million (US$2 million) to extend the network for the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT), in hope of providing it with a resolution rivaling that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

could we build a scope with Venus, Earth and Mars as part of the structure?

Yes

I wonder what happened to that earlier worldwide network of radio telescopes. The VLBA. It included US mainland radio telescopes as well as one each in Effelsberg Germany, Hawaii, Arecibo and St Croix from the Caribbean. Wouldn’t the VLBA be larger than LOFAR?

In order to incorporate Mars and Venus into the network you need to cover all intermediate distances between those and distances on Earth in a slowly expanding series. Using for instance one or more radio telescopes each at geosynchronous orbit, Moon, the Lagrangian points of the Earth Moon system and the Lagrangian points of the Earth Sun system. Adding a few extra Lagrangian points for Mars Sun and Venus Sun systems would help, too.

To the best of my knowledge it still exists and is in operation.
