Subject: Greetings from Jindabyne
Well have I had an adventure. I am sitting in a friend’s holiday unit with one arm and one leg up contemplating when it will be time to take some more panadeine forte. The wrist of my right hand is in a plaster slab due to a fracture of the radial head and my right foot and shin is swollen and tender. I have some amazing bruises on my left knee and shin along with some grazes. More bruises are emerging in all sorts of places and my back and neck muscles are stiff and sore.
So how did this come about, you ask?
Well it all started when mr BG and I set off on Thursday to join up with friends in Jindabyne for a motorcycle event that is held in memory of a young fellow who died of cancer to raise funds into cancer research. We had a somewhat uneventful ride to Albury where we spent the night.
Friday morning saw us set off from Albury, mr BG on his triumph and me riding the bmw with sidecar. Most of the morning was a lovely ride on a twisty mountain road, UNTIL……..

One thing that is required for safe motorcycle riding is to be constantly on your guard and have full concentration at all times. Unfortunately for me I let my concentration lapsed and took the smooth riding for granted. So when the tight lefthander got even tighter and the sidecar lifted off the road, I had 2 options: go even faster so that the acceleration brings the sidecar down again but would leave me going at an even faster speed which was already proving to be too fast for the conditions; or break as hard as I could to bring the sidecar down and reduce speed which would also straighten me up, and try to take the bend again.
You must realise that mr BG was behind me witnessing all this….
Anyway I opted for the second choice but there simply was not enough road to complete the manoeuvre. I braked, brought the sidecar down, and realised that this put me on a collision course with a bloody big gum tree. At this point I shut my eyes and waited for the splat. I think I swore at this point too.
Next thing I know is that I am rolling with my eyes still closed then came to a stop with my legs crossed up around a tree. Mr BG was running down the hill calling me while I called out to him “I am alive”. This much I knew.

I then spent some moments wriggling fingers and toes to make sure I could. Having determined that I still could and that I could move limbs without too much pain mr BG helped me lift my leg from the rather uncomfortable position around the tree. Once I was a little more comfortable he was able to get back up onto the road and wave down a car who drove back some distance to where there was a police car so that he could call the ambulance as we were out of phone range. While we waited mr BG helped me out of my helmet and jacket and covered me with a sleeping bag. By this stage although I hurt all over the worst of it was in my right wrist and ankle and suspected that they may be broken.
The policeman arrived first, we heard the sirens, and he then confirmed the location with the ambulance which had been despatched from Corryong and which would be another hour to arrive. He took down all the details of the accident and helped mr BG put my foot up on a piece of luggage to keep any swelling down. By the time the ambulance arrived the policeman had also recruited a few more helpers to help get me onto the stretcher and lift me up the embankment and into the back of the ambulance. As he was on his own another ambulance had been despatched from Albury to meet up with us and when it arrived then they left the first ambulance and both took me on to Corryong hospital in the second. Morphine was administered and a more thorough assessment done on the way. Once at the hospital I was x-rayed and found to only have a single fracture in the wrist. This was put in a slab and I was then given a bed for the night in my own room.

In the meanwhile the fellow who first stopped took all out luggage into Jindabyne for us, including mr bg’s wallet so he had to go on to get it and to report in with our friends. They promptly decided it was not safe for him to return to be with me and seeing I was in good hands they got him drunk and sent him to bed.
The next day mr bg and our friends arranged a tow truck to recover the bike which was a lot more broken than I was and then came and collected me from the hospital and brought me back to Jindabyne, where I am now.
Mr bg rode back to Melbourne today where he is to pick up the ute and trailer and #1 daughter and come back to collect me and the wreck of the bike.
So there is my adventure, may I never have another one like it. It was frightening and I thought I was going to die. I thank God I got off as lightly as I did. I would like to bear testament to the friendliness and helpfulness of the policeman who came to the scene, the ambulance drivers, and the staff at Corryong hospital. They all went out of their way to make sure that I was as comfortable as could be and lacked for nothing.

Mr BG says:
I saw my woman (who is one of the most experienced sidecarists I know of) loose control of her rig. I saw her slam into a huge tree and I thought that she was dead.
As I got off my bike and ran to the scene I was shouting out these words; “I love you Bev”. I shouted it over and over. I was doing that because I thought that she was dying or dead, and I wanted her to pass-over hearing me say that I loved her. Think of that what you will, it an was automatic response.
I still have the horror-movie in my head of seeing my beloved hit that tree. I have no idea how anyone could survive an impact like that. You may not believe in miracles, maybe I didn’t either before.
But my BG isn’t dead, and I’m frigging sure that it’s a miracle that she ain’t! Praise YHWH (God)
Hey BG, I hope you don’t get fed up with hugs and kisses. Because I’ve got a lot more waiting for you! You tough old bird!

Seems a bit of a drastic way to try getting out of going to work though. LOL.

WOW
You have my sympathy. The very first holiday I took with MrBL on the bike (me pillioning) we had a similar accident and went off the edge of The Putty Rd. I broke my tree, but it was a lot smaller.
MrBL raced to rescue his bike which was still reving it’d guts out and a total stranger found me much further down the hill. :(
Amazingly I was only badly bruised.
He took a bit of living that down, and I spent the next few weeks in long pants and long sleeves, hiding from my Mum, so she wouldn’t find out.
Hugs to you both and I hope you’re feeling better soo

OMG! BG and Mr BG
How could any of us have dry eyes?
Veg is right BG don’t worry about the bike …. bikes can be replaced YOU can’t.
I too, many years ago, had a VERY close look at the road after being flipped off the back of a bike. We were on a dirt road (not on a dirt bike) and the driver went to change gear but it slipped into neutral and we fish tailed and slipped all over the place until we ‘hit the deck’.
Thankfully the worst of it was a big fright but I will never forget it and am not one to ride pillion again. I actually have a bike license but will NEVER ride.
Call me chicken …. I just feel too vulnerable on a bike.

You tough old bird!
damn! I think I’m going to cry!
Me too :-)
Just as well I had some tissues in my handbag, my eyes went all watery.
I can see why you’re still happily married after all these years, with a husband not afraid to say loving things like that :)

Holy crap!!!
Just stumbled upon this thread and had no idea you’d been trying to fly! You’re supposed to have grown out of that by age 10 didn’t you know!
And of all things to choose to break your fall, a tree! Not exactly the most forgiving and flexible surface but I suppose it was better than a rock. :P
Really glad you’re ok and still with us. You look amazingly chirpy in the pic outside the hospital for someone who’s just gone through that! Nicely written too btw!

BG, I hope you’re on the mend. It is good to hear that you survived and the bike will be back on the road and that Mr BG is caring for you.
