All five planets visible with the naked eye will form a line across the sky from early this morning until February 20, for the first time since 2005.
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible about an hour before sunrise, from high in the north to low in the east, according to Museum Victoria astronomer Dr Tanya Hill.
The remaining planets Neptune and Uranus and the dwarf planet Pluto are not visible with the naked eye, but Dr Hill said the five bright planets have been observed since ancient times.
“There are only a few amazing things in the night sky that can be seen without any equipment,” Dr Alan Duffy from Swinburne University said.
There will be a viewing window between 5.30am and 5.40am (AEDT) on January 20, expanding to an hour between 5:00am and 6:00am February 20.

I thought about it this morning but a) it was cloudy and b) I’d have to go to the beach because my eastern view is blocked by trees and houses.
