Our Place in the Universe: The Most Detailed Map Yet

This new video from Futurism.com shows our place in the Laniakea Supercluster. Superclusters are the largest-scale structures in the universe, and next to them, we are indeed puny creatures. Our Milky Way galaxy is but a tiny dot in an unremarkable corner of Laniakea.

>Feeling small?

Nope. Feeling pretty damn big that we can climb high enough to see these kind of views.

There was a brilliant review of the possible answers to the question “what is the largest structure in the universe?” in the last episode of the history channel “The Universe” series. The general consensus from largest down was:
1) The cosmic web
2) Bubbles in the cosmic web, eg. the Bootes bubble
3) Superclusters, eg. The Shapley supercluster
4) Alpha lyman blobs
Then getting down to galaxy size
5) Radio lobes of giant active galaxies
6) CD galaxies.

One of the astronomers interviewed disagreed with the cosmic web because he claimed that is is disconnected so can’t be seen as a single entity, he put superclusters as the largest objects.
