I have gathered my courage together and tipped out 2 of the smaller pots of spuds. As the leaves were dying and they hadn’t flowered I expected a soggy smelly mess. What a great surprise! Lovely new potatoes! These were from the supermarket ones that had sprouted in the pantry so I don’t know the variety. The rest of the pots and bins are powering on, and the ones in the 60lt bins are in flower. :):)

I’ve got spuds growing in cages, but I’m really skeptical. I know in theory there should be lots of little potatoes buried in there, but until I see ‘em I ain’t going to believe it. Noticed that the 2nd lot I planted have just poked up above the dirt. They’ve been planted out of season, but they were shooting in the pantry so I figured – what the heck. Either chuck ‘em to the chooks or plant ‘em. You never know.
It’s all a learning curve at the moment. If they grow good, I’ll make a note that I can plant ‘em later than the books say. If they don’t grow good – what have I lost? A bit of gardening soil and hay, and not a lot else.

Good on you! I too have been collecting new spuds. Having been doing so for a about a week or so now every couple of days. Pulled some lovely ones today…king edward, ruby lou and a couple of kipler. Yummo. They have so much flavour! Beats supermarket any day.
By the way I am so pleased to have found this forum! It’s good to be back.
I used to be an occasional contributor a couple of years ago to the old ABC Gardening Australia forum with the username of “beaver”. I have made the occasional post to the new forum, but not much really. I’m not overly impressed with it. I’ll have to learn my way around this forum, particuarly regarding uploading photos. Oh and another thing which I’m sure Lucky would appreciate..since Saturday we have had 12 chickens hatch (from the incubator) and they are so cute! Had most of our taken by a couple of pet (not mine) Alaskan Malmuts last year and we are slowly building up our flock again. The dogs ripped the door of the chook house to get them! The dogs have now fortunately gone to feral doggie heaven.
We have a couple of hens sitting, but they only have a couple of eggs each. My son wants to know what we are going to be doing with the all the roosters (such a positive soul he is; but considering our usual success rate with hatching roosters it’s not surprising)…They’ll be still too young for Chrissy Dinner!

The King Edward have the most beautiful flavour. We grew them last year as well, but have gone better with them this year.
We’ve also been harvesting the kipler for a few days now. They are lovely as wedges (skin on) and oven fried. I just zap them in the micro for about 7 minutes then place them on a biscuit tray with cooking spray and then then give them a light spray as well. Absolutely delicious. Much nicer than deep fried.

That’s great.
I had to remove a small vegie bed this morning and to my surprise got enough spuds for tonights dinner. I didn’t even plant any this year, they’ve just done their own thing. What a bonus.

good growing/ eating orchid
whats your assessment of the pots?
did they get the right amount of moisture?
btw spuds are finished when the tops are brown, droopy and completely dead – so you are all harvesting before the plants have finished growing. – which is what i’m dying to do too – woohoo.

So far pepe I think they’re a great success, but I’m a novice at this and don’t know a good crop from a bad one. The tops of these 2 pots had died off but were still green.
The spuds in the bins are huge now and in flower. Can’t wait to see what they’ve produced. One thing I have noticed though, all the potatoes formed around the roots of the plant, nothing on the long tall stems that I’d been busy hilling up.
A bonus with these containers is that the contents, minus the spuds, can go straight on the vegie beds to be planted out. All good stuff!

just don’t put it anywhere you plan on growing tomatoes or other related plants. I did this one year and I think I passed on a disease or something as the tomato plants were really sickly that year.

I’m tempted to harvest mine. I’m not sure whether the tops are dieing off or just suffering because of the weather. I noticed yesterday a dirty great big hole (about 3 inches across) running into the soil/hay right next to a stem. Bit concerned some little furry blighter is going to get more spuds than me. They’re in wire cages but the tops are open to the world – and possums, and rats, and any other keen digger critter.

Evening all. HP are they Desirees? I have had a few of my Desiree’s look exactly like that, but only the really big ones. Maybe it’s the way they normally go if we leave them to grow big. Mostly the Desirees I have bought from the supermarket are much smaller and smoother. Likewise my own smaller ones. I think it might just be a feature of the Desiree potato, but I have no scientific basis for the idea.

This is what I followed Rook, it’s working well for me. You can play with the ingredients, whatever you have available will work. I used Sugar Cane mulch layered with compost, Blood & Bone, horse manure, a bit of potash and anything else I had around.
