Is this possible? wouldn’t it be a stroke or heart attack? presumably caused by a very stressful mental situation?

Fright is a trigger for physical system weaknesses. Enough fright might trigger a delerium state which left untreated can become fatal.

OK, thanks, that sounds convincing.

No worries. :)
An army doctor I used to know told me that it’s not only possible, but causes detectable changes in several organs, so can be determined as a cause of death. This was in the context of people dying in bushfires.

btm thankyou too, but it also seems likely that this “reflex”? could also be counter productive, causing death where survival was a possibility.

Is that due to damage by excessive adrenaline ?

I don’t know. This was several years ago, and I didn’t ask for details. I’ve since lost contact with him.
In an episode of Jonathon Creek it seemed like people were dying of fright when they looked out a particular window. Turned out there were poisoned spikes in the floorboard.
Electrified spikes.
Not to cast Nastursiums or anything, but I would be fucken astonished if an otherwise-healthy person can die of fright.
For anyone with pubmed access, you can look at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/981493
Entitled “ death from fright report of a case and literature review”.

+1
I saw a video of this recently which showed very fine ‘strings’ in part of the heart, which can be broken in cases of trauma, even emotional trauma.
And like OCDC said, AKA Broken Heart Syndrome.

I get a strong sensation of electric shock vertically through the left side of the chest (just left of the mid-line) if something really scares me, like a sudden frightening image or similar. Quite uncomfortable.

electro cardio? I’d be talking to a professional.
I can safely say it’s been tested every way known to man and beast and it’s fine.
