Solved it, the rear brakes were locked on, so I hit it with a hammer, fixed that.
Now it wont start, probably flooded.

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you got an electrical problem…
Before the chain saws were invented, the timber industry in the United States and Canada was an occupation which posed serious challenges to its workers and we are only talking about 125 years ago. In the Northwest, on the Pacific coast there were forests full of giant trees and cutting of these trees was done by hand.
must have been a similar thing here in Australia in the early days

It certainly was. they’d cut a slot in the trunk and slip a board into it. stand on the board and cut another slot higher up, slip a board into it by this method clim the tree to trim off branches abd cut the top off before they came down and cut the tree into lengths as they came down.

Oh, I clicked on this thinking it would be the MMBW wooden water pipes. Very old. Sort of like barrels with wire wound round and round and round. There are some remnants in Mum’s garden that Dad salvaged 25-30 years ago or more when a pipe replacement thing was going on.

Not too bad. The table top is more artwork than woodwork IMHO. Probably for those possessed of near infinite patience.
I have a plan for a coffee table with a glass top and a world map underneath as in a display cabinet. I bought a world map but so far haven’t started on the project.

Surien is relatively cheap and worth the effort. It is soft, but sands well to a plane, because of its fine grain. And (like Australian Red Cedar) it loves shellac, from matte finish right the way through to the super high gloss french polish finish.

And he answered just the same
And I put him in a matchbox

Actually, it seems few beetles die; they are not deliberately killed for shellac anyway. It is an exudate from the beetles.

Not at all difficult. Brush it on. 4 coats over 10 minutes gives a lovely matt finish. 10 coats gives a great semi-gloss finish. French polishing is difficult and time consuming, but the extraordinarily high gloss is worth the effort.

It’s not durable against hot water (or hot pans), ethanol and ammonia. But it’s easy to repair. I’ve shellac-finished many things and it wears very little. It survives time, which many of the plastic finishes don’t – they slowly deteriorate.
