serious question.
I actually very rarely bother. If they are close to the same shade then that’s close enough for me. The length, weave etc don’t come into it.
do you hang them together on the line, and how do you feel about missing socks

I like the symmetry. But I don’t throw out un-worn out socks, and often throw out only one of a pair. So at the moment I have one unmatched pair that I wear. When I wear socks, that is. Which is when I wear shoes, which is not that often.
serious question.

Yes I do. A missing sock has only occurred once in my life, and that occurred when someone else pulled my washing out of the machine in the 2000 person camp so they could use the machine.

You realise that if all your socks are the same (size, style, colour, etc) they’re all pairs of each other, so you never have to worry about finding pairs, don’t you?
to get even wear rates.
My socks regularly don’t match.
They just keep my feet warm, and help my feet to feel comfortable inside shoes. I don’t care if they match or not.

I often don’t.
>I like the symmetry.
Don’t they live in the cupboard/draw together after washing (it starts on the line), having a nice cuddle, knowing they were meant to be together, but after a days work it doesn’t matter so much.
But too right back in the factory they were a pair, or became a pair when packaged.
Pairs belong to each other.
You get to the end of hanging the clothes out and there’s a lonely one, and you think like where’s your partner. If there’re two odd socks suspicion mounts.
I’m with BTM here. I have a small collection of ‘technical’ socks (2 pairs merino, 2 pairs waterproof, 2 pairs hiking) for various special activities but my everyday socks are a dozen or so pairs of black explorers.
I’ve sewn little matching names tags onto all my pairs of socks and if one goes missing it’s like a death in the family

On January 1st 2016 I bought 12 pairs of Golden Toes sockies. It was a deal. Some days I might have a pair on, some days all hell has broken loose in the sock drawer.
I hate them. It’s them or my Holeproof Explorers and they don’t work too well in my boots for long shifts of walking and standing and stuff.
I need to rethink this sock situation I have created.
I have a few special patterned pairs I wear occasionally, but most of my socks are bulk purchases of the same black socks, in two categories: winter (long, thick) and summer (short, thin).

What’s wrong with them?
Yeah. Explorers are good, but there’s better. Tightly-looped Merino is hard to beat.

When I go to fires I wear two pairs of socks. One thick & the other thin. The thin ones don’t move relative to my skin so I don’t get blisters. The movement takes place between the two socks.

I find Explorers good last me for many years, they don’t get holes just loose some elasticity.
They don’t like dryers though, tend to shrink
I agree with all of the above, basically, except for Cymek’s little matching name tags, and even then, my favourite socks have printing on the sole so I can be sure which one is which. Merino makes me itch so I never wear it.
I wear matching socks when I can. I pin pairs to the line but mrs m (who does all the washing) doesn’t. I only have 3 types of sock. Five or more pairs of my favourite black type (Bonds 11-14), five pairs of an uncomfortable black type mrs m bought in bulk when I wasn’t looking, and one pair of white that I never wear.
I wear my favourite socks because they’re comfortable and durable. I never stress about missing socks, and throw out only one of a pair when it gets a hole (for the second time). Mrs m is a marvel at darning socks, I was always terrible at it.
PS. I only ever wear one pair of shoes. Aagin, comfort and durability is the key.
I wonder if I could turn that into a bumper sticker “Comfort and Durability”.

I just bought a couple of pairs of these unseen, on the materials and guarantee alone.

I did make that up
I used to wear Explorers back in my running days. I always found them better than any of the proprietary running socks. But more recently I’ve discovered bamboo socks. Wonderful, wonderful things for inside the work boots. Buggers to get dry (we use solar and wind for drying around here, or slow combustion heater in the winter – racks over the tops of the doors up where most of the heat is).
Where do you get bamboo socks?

My mother is a big fan of bamboo underwear, but I haven’t been able to find any.

Target have women’s bamboo undies. They are hotter than cotton to wear.

That’d be the cheaper split cane

Probably a good thing, I don’t think you should be wearing her underwear.
There was a chemical analysis on TV of bamboo based fabrics. It turns out that they are just viscose, otherwise known as rayon, the earliest synthetic fibre. Nothing of the original bamboo survives, it’s identical chemically and physically to every other rayon. The first production step is to completely dissolve the bamboo in sodium hydroxide.

So it’s an expensive gimmick

I guess at least they are using a ‘renewable’ form of cellulose…
It’s not all that expensive. The socks I buy are not particularly expensive, as far as I can remember. Cheaper than Explorers, I think. But I have trouble getting Explorers small enough for me. I used to be able to buy boys ones, the ladies ones tend to be a mix, not all wool. I still have a couple of unused pairs stashed away.

Heh. Love it.
I was surprised, but it is true.

Had to laugh at a bloke I saw the other day. He had his left sock on his right foot and vice versa.

I noticed that not one daycare worker at Little Miss’ new daycare wore matching socks.

…not wishing to provoke any anxiety, but you might want to ask them what’s going on with these mismatched socks. I’m sure there’s some perfectly simple explanation.

It’s probably some whizzo new trend, like planking and same sex marriage

I only start to worry when I see different earrings in each ear.
