Subject: Agoraphobia and society

The definition of agoraphobia was officially changed in 2013. It’s been downgraded from a panic disorder to an anxiety disorder. (There’s a world of difference between anxiety and panic). Also, it’s not a fear of open spaces or public spaces but rather a fear of being somewhere where you don’t have control.

So my question is: How has the fear of not being in control shaped social history?
Do animals get agoraphobia?

I’m thinking in terms of suffrage, politics, wars, capitalism vs communism, self-service, internet, home ownership, business ownership, tycoons, control freaks, crime.

Giving up freedom to somone(s) who offer us control, its usually a lie and results in even less control over our own lives. Most of what people value is all bullshit, fame, fortune, power what the hell for, all it means is somone tries to take it from you. We as a race commit the most despicable acts for some sort of control usually by repressing others we think are a threat. I bet though that control over our own destiny which should include control over what we want to do to our bodies (ie personalised genetic manipulation not passed on through our germ line)) will be denied probably by the good old “playing god” quote

sort of twisted outcome if some mischief’d‘ve been had with functional reticence, like a mind wanted to flee from the disturbing idea it’s environmentally dtermined, or culturally determined, a contemporary social construct.

nature rolls the dice broad though, all those neurons to configure, certainly with the human replicator.

don’t you be shying now from a lack of control.

Kenophobia is the fear of voids or empty spaces.

Ever noticed when you get angry, that you have lost control of something or someone

not enough is known about how emotions are created from chemical mixtures happening in the body when confronted with something

like when the computer freezes or play up

when a child does something wrong

when someone fails to give way etc

For me getting anxious in a crowd has to do with sensory overload, lack of familiarisation, and not being about to control the situation

I have aspergers, so in a crowd I will experience visual and auditory overload, so a crowd becomes unpleasant

lack of familiarisation means to be in a crowd all the time and getting used to it if one can, I cannot

I was like this a school as well, just did not want to be there because of the noise

and being able to control the situation might mean walking away to a quieter spot, wearing ear plugs and sun glasses to reduce sensory overload.

Last time I was angry was 1994, during a home invasion.

No. If anything the opposite. I figured out long ago that for me, anger is always associated with suppressed jealousy. i.e, when someone does something that I won’t admit wanting to do because my moral system won’t allow me to. Like being stupid.

Miss mollwollfumble thinks I have aspergers. I think not. In a crowd I will also experience visual and auditory overload, so a crowd becomes unpleasant. That’s different to crowd avoidance by someone with agoraphobia, where visual and auditory overload is not the problem.

That’s a bit extreme. I very seldom get angry, can go for months without getting angry, but I find that anger gives me energy to do things, to take positive action. I did once meet a person who was terrified of anger.

Glad you didn’t tell me that before we went rocketing.

This question may seem off topic, but actually isn’t.

Under what circumstances is a home invasion legal? Police? Crime scene? Rental inspection? RSPCA? Health inspector? Repossession? Eviction? Involuntary committal? Ambulance? Fire brigade? Other?

I ask because the four that can relate directly to agoraphobia are rental inspection, health inspection, involuntary committal and ambulance.

In Victoria at least, the only emergency service who can enter a premises without permission or a warrant is the fire brigade. They’re also the only service who can remove a person from a house without a warrant or permission from a guardian/person with Power of Attorney.
