Subject: Browser for Windows XP
I would like suggestions for a new browser for this Windows XP machine.
I’ve been using Chrome for some years now and it was OK, but recently they’ve done some stuff which makes it pretty much unusable with multiple tabs open. (Yes, I know they’ve stopped supporting XP, but what choice do I have with the OS anyway? It’s not like Bill is going to give me Win 10 as I didn’t have Win 7 installed.)
Anyway, recommendations, please.

Are you using it with XP?
I read that it runs the same engine as Chrome.

I’ve got an older (not updated) version of Chrome, Opera, and firefox on my XP box. The box is small and slow, so it can’t handle updating to W7 or later, but ff seems to be the least worst on it.

yes uses the open source of Chromium which is behind chrome. this is an win 7 XP machine. the lappy is win 10 and that runs opera fine.

As an aside, how did you stop Chrome from updating? On mine it just does it and doesn’t even ask.

Well there you go. I’ve never participated in browser wars as I see that everyone has their own preferences. Getting one that works is usually satisfying enough for most.

I prefer to see it as the inverted alternative browser.

Hey MV I think I may have another possibly more suitable option. I ‘slightly’ upgraded pc’s recently and still have the old one which is only marginally less powerful than this one discounting the substantial graphics card upgrade that came with the newer machine. I can set that up here with Win10, from which point I understand that a basic license allows you at least 2 installations allowing you to convert your laptop to same.
What say ye?

I’ll pass for the moment. Apart from the browser, there is another issue with this computer. It keeps going to 100% cpu use. Perhaps it is at the end of its life.
I now installed Firefox, which i think works better than Chrome. At least, it seems not to be leaking data all over the place and costing lots of bandwidth.

I installed an
SSD a couple of years back.
SSD’s don’t need defragging, and apparently are damaged by defragging. I don’t know what Defender is. I certainly don’t have that program.

Plenty of flavours out there that work on lower spec machines, some easier than others, but I have only really had experience with Xubuntu at the lower end and had it working fine on 10+ year old machines. Good enough for most normal, day to day, computer tasks…

From the conclusions to that article:
“ I’m firmly convinced that the tiny difference that even the best
SSD defragger makes is not worth reducing the life span of your
SSD. Add another voice to the chorus that’s singing “Don’t defrag your
SSD.””
Thanks.
So, how do I get to this Defender?

Just a quick thought. Have you tried a power reboot? If you don’t know that involves shutting down, removing the power source, including laptop battery in the case of your laptop, then pressing the on button to drain the power from the components. Cleans fragments out of the various memory units so rebooting is fresh. Worth a try.

The way your cpu is going to 100% makes it sound like this is the problem.
