Somehow i managed to damage my pc’s NTFS file system in the last couple of days. Attempts to fix it with boot repair made matters worse and the i got tired and formatted allpartitions on my SSD.

I can get as far as “windows is setting up your system” on a clean install. It freezes about there.

If anyone can offer some guidance here it would be very kind.

Yes. I do have slightly above minimum familiarity with pc behaviour. I haven’t turned it on since last night so I’ll explore the token effort but I believe more will be required.

Maybe you shouldn’t have formatted all partitions. There might have been something on one of them that Windows needs to reinstall.

But I’m not remotely an expert :)

Well they do know the day & date so, yes, true.
We fooled the Friday the 13th virus by changing the computer date so we had one 12th, no 13th & two 14ths.

I got this procedure from Seven Forums

Windows 7: windows 7 stuck on setup is starting

the first bit

Unplug all other HD’s and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes.

the second bit

follow the Dos commands to setup the disk for the OS

boot into Windows 7 installer DVD

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL=“WINDOWS 7”
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created.

some people create two partitions on their hard disk

one for the OS and one for Data

It helps when you need to reinstall the OS and keeps data separate

others have two drives

another option is two have two in one drives, these are typically an SSD + a Sata Drive in one 2.5 HD case

Aah the error if my ways. Seems to be a simple matter of properly disinfecting the various drives of the various win installs that had supposedly been formatted. Will take seconds for the ssd but a bit longer for everything else will absorb some time. Live and learn

Reseat ram. Reseat graphics card. Power boot. Repeat. System install. Duh dun. Start again. Allmost had exactly what i was after yesterday but some false move in the format stage locked me out of my data disk. One day I’ll just build a brand new system and move on.

Figured out what this stooputerness is. Am I missing an obvious reason they have persisted with the 90 degree card jacking system for mounting display adapters and plug in hardware?

Wouldn’t locking flexicable be less prone to misalignment due to chassis warp and the like?

Well this is new and TOTALLY AWESOME! Looks like even drivers will come with attached virus-like software. Have spent the last half a day repeatedly removing the peripheral softwares attached to the display driver that I specifically ticked “Don’t Install” on. It and a couple of other programs that came from something else have been fighting harder than an angry NT Barra to stay parasitically attached to my system.

I predict manual virus/trojan removal will be the fishing of the future……..

It and a couple of other programs that came from something else have been fighting harder than an angry NT Barra to stay parasitically attached to my system.

I predict manual virus/trojan removal will be the fishing of the future……..

The amount of bloatware that comes with most prepackaged PCs is amazing

This little box can take 5 minutes to switch between browser tabs, and up to 15 minutes to get and assemble hotmail. And I have no idea where to start speeding it up.

reinstall the lot from scratch..

Cost me $50 to buy a win7 ultimate key and then upgrade to win10. If you buy a key I will send you the legit install software for win7 and win10 upgrade.

This is Win 10. I’ve inherited it from Mrs V, after my XP got flooded.

oh ok

I would have no idea how to do that. It came installed with Win 7, which got upgraded to Win 10. I think that lives on a hidden partition.

fist-bump :P

I’ve found win10 is mostly great. Trying to figure out why google chrome isn’t automatically signing in. Might have something to do with those dodgy drivers I installed.

I’m still wary of upgrading. I have a very cheap laptop and fear it will not cope with Win10. I am very happy with Win 8.1 and will stick with it for the time being.

If it hasn’t been updated to the november update that is why it is running slow. It is a 4G download but I have the standalone install here if you want me to send it to you ready to go.

If it copes with 8, 10 should not be a problem for it.

Doesn’t Win 10 automatically update? How would I tell whether it had “the November update”?

MV, one way to find out all sorts of stuff about your computer is to open a cmd prompt, make sure there’s at least 1000 lines of history buffer (right-click on the top bar, select “Properties”, select the “Layout” tab, and change the “Height” field in the “Screen Buffer Size” panel to more than 1000 (the maximum is 9999), then type
systeminfo
at the prompt, and hit return. It’ll take a while gathering the information, but it’ll tell you all about the machine, from what type of processor and how much physical memory it’s got, when the OS was installed, when the machine was last booted, and how many network cards are in it, to what updates have been installed. There’s a lot of info, though, so you’ll need to scroll back to read it all.

Lots of ways:
1. Press “Windows key” + “x”, and click (or tap) on “command prompt” in the menu that appears.
2. Open task manager, select file->“Run new task…”. and type “cmd” or “cmd.exe” in the box that pops up, and press OK.
3. As above, but if you hold the ctrl key as you press File->“Run new task…” a command prompt will appear.
4. Type “cmd” into the search box. To get a search box, press “Windows key” + “x”.
5. Open the Start menu and click (or tap) “All apps” at the bottom, then select “Windows System”, and click (or tap) “command prompt” from that.
6. Open a file explorer, go to C:\Windows\System 32, scroll down, and select cmd.exe
7. Press “Windows key” + “r” to get a “run” prompt. Type “cmd” or “cmd.exe” into that, and click (or tap) OK.
… etc

Part of the reason it’s running slow is that it’s only got 1GB of RAM, and it’s using all of it, and twice that in virtual memory. Virtual memory is a big file on the disk (C:\pagefile.sys in your case), so using memory means reading and writing to/from disk, which is a lot slower than physical RAM. You can reduce the amount of memory in use by stopping some programs that are not needed: to do this, right-click on the task bar and select task manager, click on the “Startup” tab, and look through that for programs that are no longer needed. It looks like Mrs V was using it for work, so there are probably some programs running that can be stopped.

The machine also looks a bit old – I’m guessing Mrs V was given the machine for work when she was with HP, around 5 years ago – and is a 32-bit processor. I’ll have to look at the specs for Windows 10, but I think it’s targeted mainly at 64-bit machines (it’ll still run on 32-bit machines, obviously, but there may be a performance hit.)

As Postpoc suggests, you don’t seem to have the latest updates. I suggest accepting his offer of the updates on a USB stick, and see if that improves things.

There should only be the driver programs for your hardware and programs you want there. If it is vital to the operating system it won’t be on that page.

I just looked at my startup and seem to have discovered what has kept chrome from auto-sign in. Cheers for that.

Not the way I will send it to you. You will just have to click run when you plug the flash drive in and the autoplay fires up.

Never been used for work. I bought it for her when the desktop died. Basically used only for emails, web browsing and one-only OpenOfficeOrg file where I record medical information regularly.
