Researchers have invented a programming language to hack living cells

Thanks to different programming languages, we can do a lot of really great things with technology that people in the past would have considered impossible. Imagine someone from the late-1800s looking at an iPhone.

While the most transformative applications for text-based programming languages have been in various modern gadgets and digital computing, we might have made a leap towards hacking actual life, with researchers from MIT announcing that they’ve created a programming language that allows them to create DNA-encoded circuits and control cells.

Do you understand this?
I don’t.

Doesn’t seem that much of a stretch. Each gene can be 0 or 1.

Haven’t read the article but basic code is basic code isn’t it?

I simply assume that the interface between the language and the gene would be 1’s and 0’s. I’m no programming genius.

its a part of genetic engineering

these scientists are performing genetic engineering tests on bacteria

which requires programming languages, they have created a circuit that interfaces with DNA in Cells of E. coli

algorithms perform functions whether man-made, natural, or both

exciting research which is going on in China and America and elsewhere

not so sure about where Australia is with genetic engineering

it can be used for positive use in containing diseases

it has a delivery system, process and outcome

and it can be used for negative purposes like genetic warfare, genetic engineering in humans

I should add

Genetic engineering E. coli for the purposes of wiping out E. coli

There are various levels of genetic information.

The first level is CGTA.

The second level ignores DNA that is non-coding and non-epigenetic.

The third level is amino acid sequence of known genes.

The fourth level ignores proteins whose function is unknown.

The fifth level tracks known mutations and ignores unknown mutations.

The sixth level tracks only mutations with known physiological effects.

It’s not at all clear to me which of the six levels this programming language is supposed to work at. And I don’t see at all why a programming language would have any advantage over a searchable database.
