Oh who cares????

Okay found thi little bugger out in the white cauli crop area.

What caused this and is it eatable for human or bunnies??

Growing in the no-dig area of the garden. Grown them there before and no problem in by gone years.

It’s a female cauli I reckon. Because it’s pink!

I’ve seen purple cauli’s in WWorths sometimes…why don’t you just break a bit off and see if it tastes OK? If it’s bitter, by all means recycle it in the farmyard, but why waste a good vegetable on them if the people can still get a meal from it?

There is a tendency for some caulifloiwers to turn yellow and some to turn purple. Depends a little upon the breeding in your seed and the Ph of the soil..
You are not giving your cauli’s enough water and fert.
You are planting them too late..

I’d be careful. There was a foodie expert on the radio the other morning (‘cause of all the power loss issues at the moment). She was saying (and logical as it is, I’d never considered it) that if off food looked, smelt or tasted bad no-one would get sick from food poisoning. Something like 400 people a year die from food poisoning.

The purple could be the plant taking up some mineral from the soil. What the mineral is would give you some clue as to the potential toxicity of the head.

Have you tried the font of all wisdom and knowledge – google?

place a tiny amount under your tounge.. wait and see your mouth reaction.. you will know if it is toxic.

what was the source of your seed, Lucky?

that right one has the shape of a Romanesco, without the green colour, and you can get purple and pink varieties of cauliflower. it could be your seed has been crossed with other varieties. even if it is sun damage I don’t think it would hurt you, but might not taste as good.

either stop buying crap breeding from your supplier or start sh=tting on your spoil.. deliberately

Ok. So how do we know what is good seed or not ?
Whats the right time to plant cauli’s in each state?
As for watering, we water when the ground looks dry I suppose.

Arhh ok..
That would be why some things don’t do well then, because I figure if it’s a seedling and for sale ( at that time) , then that is the time to grow it.

the caulis look extremely edible to me.
it can’t be your soil because you grew ten perfect broccoli heads.
most likely its a genetic breeding thing – try boiling the purple one to see if it changes colour.

as an aside – perfection is not achievable – flower arrangers are deliberately using imperfect leaves and flowers because they have more ‘character’. likewise you could see these unusual garden products as something better than normal.

its not only the toy shop that sells suspicious products – tonight i’m throwing out two rotten spuds from a newish bag bought from a s/mart.

It is simply true though that if you don’t get the timing and the water and fertilizer correct.. that one is generally better off buying cauliflowers from the grocer.
We don’t have the water unless it is a wet year.. then we have the snails and slugs. So it is like this.. When you plant cauliflower they are up to five bucks a kilo.. when you are expecting to get something from your slug ridden cauliflower patch.. you can buy them for ten cents each at the grocer.

Same with celery

There are perhaps some places in Australia where cauli’s grow well every year and there are definitely many in the good seasons when rain comes for free but some veges are simply too hard to be worth any more than the fun of trying in general.

My advice was that seed should be sown in early summer.. or.. seedlings should be obtained as early as you can get them.. putting them in late is tantamount to wasting your time.

Water must be supplied at the rate the plant requires to actually make squeaky noises as the leaves can be heard growing.. otherwise the results are sure to be less than satisfactory.

Liquid fertilisers should be applied often as these plants are heavy feeders.

The way to get good heads is to fill them with water and food..

There is a shortage of phosporus in our soils . We can replace it and other nutrients but water is the real key.

which is a good reason for planting crops out of season.

i live fairly close to lucky – north of adelaide. i can plant summer crops on sept. 1 and again on dec 1. there is sufficient sun, and lack of frost, for both planting times to be successful.

good meaty topic roughbarked, and one that will probably never be resolved.

looks like a normal and healthy purple cauli to me. maybe a stray seed from a year or two before (purple caulis) finally grew when you happened to grow the other caulis there this time. or perhaps could even be a purple cauli seedling in an otherwise white cauli seedling bulk container. purple cauli goes a nice bright green color when cooked.

Nothing normal about it at all

purple cauli is fine .. I’ll acept that

but at this time of year there is no way it will make a good cauli.. like the kind you buy.. unless you live in Tasmania.

I have cauli’s growing permanently.. like yeah .. I don’t pull them out like other folks do.

I’ve all ways been an experimenter.
So I know when cauliflower perform best and this just ain’t the right timing.

The recent cold snap made me think maybe that batch of cauli’s will head.. but then the back of my brain said “you know better than that”
