We urgently need you to help guide rescue workers on the ground in Ecuador. Go to www.planetaryresponsenetwork.org now!
The Planetary Response Network (PRN) is a new kind of Zooniverse project. Zooniverse has already made major contributions to scientific research, from marking bubbles in the Milky Way to marking giraffes in the Serengeti. As a global community coming together during a major humanitarian crisis, we think we can make a real difference exploring and tagging images taken by satellites and from the air.
Shortly after the recent earthquakes in Ecuador, we were contacted by Rescue Global to help them rapidly assess damage to structures and roads in the aftermath of the quakes. Their goal is to aid in rescue and recovery operations on the ground, but they need our help to classify satellite images of large areas so they know where aid is most needed and how best to deliver it. The PRN website has the full details of the search goals and data on the Research page.

“This is a satellite image of an affected area. Clicking the play button switches between pre- and post-event images. Use the dot icons to switch manually between images (left dot = post-quake; right dot = pre-quake). We only need you to mark things that have changed because of the earthquake. We are looking for signs of impassable roads and damage to buildings and structures. Please draw rectangles around damaged structures and mark the center of road blockages.”
“Wow! Thanks for this amazing response everyone – we’ve completed classifying the first image set in just 2 hours! If you would like to be alerted when we get new post-quake images, please sign in and make 1 classification (even if the image is blank) to be added to the project list. If your Zooniverse profile has emails turned on, you will be notified when we re-start.”
