Hi Everyone, back again in my lunch break, with another question for those that have ponds.
A friend of mine has lost all her fish to a heron and wants to know how to stop the beast returning for future feeds.
It seems obvious to put wire across it but I don’t think she wants to do that.
So I wonder if anyone has some other ideas?

Build a frame and enclose in bird netting.

But personally, I’d go with wire over the top of the pond. Might look fugly, but works!

Or, depending on how big the pond is. Perhaps making a wire crate and submerge it into the water (can be made out of chicken wire). So the fish can then hide behind the wire (perhaps cover the top with duck weed or plants).

What I did..criss-cross fishing wire across the top of the pond, or for appearances, just under the water level is ok too.
I have strung it between and around rocks surrounding the pond and it’s stopped Ibis from nicking the fish. I lost heaps of fish before this treatment, but none since.

I’ve seen wire netting covers that sit just below the water. Plants can grow through it and it’s out of sight.

reed/grass type bog plants are good for fish to hide in, as are some real or artificial small caves.
i’ve seen the use of submerged steel mesh, which was both effective and not very visible. it was rigid 50mm mesh cut to fit in the pond without any fasteners.

the best way of keeping fish, frogs and water creatures alive is to use overhanging rocks and plantings to give them hiding places
