opps a Heading might help

We just solved one of the biggest mysteries about how water flows on Mars

Researchers just uncovered an incredible fact about liquid water on Mars. It’s not just flowing; it’s also boiling. And that discovery also solves one of the major mysteries about the surface of the red planet.

The results of a new experiment published today in Nature Geoscience detail how scientists made the finding and what it means.

The actual article is not in the page linked to in that news story. It’s here: http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/ngeo2706.html

“Researchers just uncovered an incredible fact about liquid water on Mars. It’s not just flowing; it’s also boiling.”

This really should not be news to anyone who knows about Mars’s atmosphere.

Sometimes our understanding of things requires subtle connections

Mars air pressure causes boiling of water

the boiling causes dirt and dust to move

Aah, umm, err!!! Wasn’t this assumed when they measured it’s air pressure?

So you wouldn’t get a decent cup of tea or coffee if you boiled water on the surface of Mars

You would get a pretty cloud of vapor if you threw a cup of water in the air I expect.

Dude they have always said water on mars boiled off because of the low pressure atmosphere.

Nah really, we did. That aspect was already known.

I suppose what wasn’t obvious was that small amounts of dirty water flowing down a dusty surface while boiling would leave the same degree of visual evidence as larger amounts flowing without boiling.

Sublimate

Sublimation is when a solid turns directly to gas, without going through a liquid phase. So it’s not the right term for what’s being observed here.

So they assumed it was solid? Why did they assume that?

No, they didn’t assume these flows were solid.

Not quite what I was implying. Anyhoo, for liquid water under mars pressure to evaporate would have to be closer to boiling than earth’s evaporation. Not really arguing a specific point. I hadn’t delved into the mars debates very far and do appreciate the authenticity of this observation as distinguished from former hypothesis.
