I know this has been discussed here over the years….

The vet said we might need Xanax for our dog’s anxiety.

A Thunder Vest was also suggested, as were Valerian and skullcap….

poik, buffy – have either of you had any experience with dogs and Xanax?

I’m going to be away from her for over 3 weeks.

Daisy gets a bit crazy when I come home after a day at work. Hell, she gets a bit crazy if I’ve been across the road talking to the neighbour :(

We ignore the over-the-top crazy stuff, sometimes I take her out to the yard and leave her to pee and calm down. Then try for a ‘controlled re-entry into the house.

She’s a rescue dog and was mistreated as a pup :(

Xanax is highly addictive.

Try it before you go away, gave one of my dogs diazepam for a procedure once and it turned into an uncontrollable erratic fruit loop for 8 hours.

We gave our dying dog Valium & it helped enormously. She quietly went to sleep & didn’t wake up.

That’s the plan.

I once dosed two cats with the recommended travel sickness pills for a long car trip. The younger cat slept, the older cat ripped open the carrying box, charged me and bit my thumbnail right through. My dad was trying to drive on the expressway…with a psycho cat in the car. We had a small baby in the vehicle as well.

We thought we’d try the valerian first, then the Xanax if she’s not responding to that. I did see something about not taking them both at the same time.

I do want her to wake up though…. :P

Just want her to chill for a bit while I am gone.

Is there a way to give her excessive exercise to tire her out and stabilise her mood that way?

This little dog was dying but we’ve used it on healthy dogs & it seems to have a calming effect.

No.

Tie her lead to the back bumper of your car and drive to work?

kii, we successfully used Aropax (paroxetine) on our dogs when the dominance wars broke out. It worked brilliantly to chill them out. They were not sleepy, they just chilled and the fighting stopped. Then we weaned the boy off so the girl would accept him as dominant, which was the only way it was going to work, given their strength differences. At the time, it was them or us for the medication!

I recall it was bloody expensive to buy it for canine use…..no PBS subsidies there. But it did work. I suspect there might be some left up in the cupboard, but it was many years ago and should by rights have been thrown out. I think I kept it to remind me that sometimes it doesn’t matter how trained they are, they are still, underneath, dogs.

We’re already drugging one cat with two meds :( though not every day.

We really just need something for Daisy whilst I am gone for over 3 weeks.
