The Highlands of PNG are made up of some seriously rugged mountains and very fertile valleys where it rains on a daily basis around 2pm and the people are natural-born-gardeners. They love to plant flowers to help beautify their gardens and they will place vegetable gardens on some of the steepest slopes you will see.

This ‘ere thread will take you on a slideshow of some of the pretty flowers, fungi and orchids that you will find in Enga.

First up a shot of a typical fence in the Highlands, these fences help keep the pigs out…

some sort of waxy flower i seem to know but can’t recall a name.

Well I’m amazed – did you get close enough to smell it? Elder flowers have a very strong perfume which to some is an acquired taste. It just seems too English a plant to find in PNG LOL.

didn’t the English run the place for a while? It would seem a very English thing to grow gardens just like “home” where ever they could.

no I didn’t sniff the plant/flowers… at the time, I did n’t know I was meant to…

and when the summer temps average between 13-22 and the winter averages between 9-16 then the highlands of PNG are cool enough for English plants… it even snows occasionally.

the Germans and Spanish were also responsible for a lot of introductions.

I loved your quote HP, “Who would have thought it possible that a tiny little flower
could preoccupy a person so completely that there simply
wasn’t room for any other thought…. ”

But I think I would apply it to PM’s pic of the clover flower above. Who would have thought the lowly clover flower could strike such a chord. Great shot PM. Liked them all really.
