Subject: Desktop PC is BSODing

I’ve just got my desktop PC out of storage after a year in there.

Upon bootup, it’s BSODing every time and I can’t find any way to get past it. Is anyone here able to help? I need it fixed today (if possible) so I can copy everything off of it and put it on an external HD.

It just says “A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.”

Any ideas what’s going wrong or how to fix it?

Is anything plugged into the USB ports, if so try unplugging and try again.
BSOD are painful and usually quite hard to work out what’s causing them if they keep doing it

Or alternatively, is there a “boot disk” i can download and burn to a CD, then use that to boot up, and still access everything on the PC’s hard drives (all 3)?

Only thing plugged in is the USB keyboard. I’ll try that.

Nope, still has the same problem :(

I think various Linux bootable disks exist, not sure where as I am at work and are limited to what I can access

download puppy linux to access the files, can boot from CD or USB.

More details needed i.e. what is the BSOD error message?

I’ve never used Linux before. I’m needing to access all 3 hard drives (NTFS I think?) and copy them all to an external HD, which I think is also NTFS.

If this is possible with a Linux boot up, I’ll give it a go.

Start by reseating your ram, it’s often the problem.

Have you tried swearing at it?

If so, I’m out of ideas.

BSOD says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Sucks when that happens means lots of money needed for a new one

Went to Masters Hardware.

I hope Bunnings doesn’t find out but honestly, it meant nothing.

•STOP: 0×0000007B typically indicates a hard drive fault. Try booting into BIOS and see if the boot drive can be seen. (Press the F8 key or the Delete key while the computer is starting)

You could try reseating the hard drive connectors or take the hard drive out of that machine and plug it into another machine to see if it actually works.

Have just downloaded a 650mb boot CD using my parents’ internet. Found my 3rd hard drive wasn’t plugged in. So I plugged it in.

Started booting up with Windows 7 and thought “Oh hang on, this was a Windows 7 PC.”

Boots up fine. Turns out I had unplugged the Windows 7 boot hard drive a long time ago and forgotten about it.

Grrrrrrr… stoopid head.

Thanks everyone anyway :)

I’m much better in the court room than I am these days as a PC tech.

And that’s not saying much either.

650 mb boot disk. I recall back in the day making boot disks for the mighty 386 so I could get enough memory for a game to run. Each boot dusk was only a couple of kb. Games designers used different amounts of EMS and XMS, so everytime you purchased a game you had fun for hours configuring sys to run it. Often the game would work but you would have no sound so back to boot disk configuring.

You were told to check the cabling nearly an hour ago.

I did check the cabling. Two hard drives plugged in, one of them had Windows XP on it.

It was only later on that I unplugged everything and started doing one at a time, that I thought I’d check the 3rd hard drive too. For some reason I thought it was no longer working, and that’s why it wasn’t plugged in.

Contains 3 hard drives, and 2 of them are boot drives. The main one I use as a boot drive was the unplugged one.

I had a BSOD this morning, following a lengthy Microsoft automatic software update. The computer this morning first hung for two hours on automatic shutdown after the software update. I fixed that by pressing the “reset” button. Then about 5 minutes after recovery and logging in got a BSOD. The computer came back OK after that.

I find the “reset button” absolutely invaluable for recovering from Microsoft-caused crashes. If you haven’t got a reset button then switch the computer off at the wall for about ten seconds. Or for a laptop remove the battery completely for about ten seconds.

Which Windows operating system are you using? I used to get multiple “BSOD” that I couldn’t get past on Windows 10, so reverted to Windows 7, which is more stable. At that time I overcame the multiple BSOD problem by first booting to “Safe Mode with Network” then following the instructions for uninstalling Windows 10. Not sure which website the uninstall instructions were on, but I think it was this one:
