Subject: autumn seed

I’m ordering my seed and was wondering if anyone can recommend the following
-tatsoi – pak choi – winter purslane – radicchio – collards ?

also birds got to my table grapes and i need a bag cover. cloth bags are dear but exclusion bags are only $10 per 50 bags and i’m wondering if these will prevent the blackbirds from pecking?

I’d also look at using a wooden stick to just keep the netting off the fruits as well….

right – so pak choi takes longer to go to seed than bok choi – i hope?
and radicchio is a sort of red cabbage (palla rossa and red verona from eden seeds)?
i have never grown either – so can you say why they are your favourites PM?

Perhaps the versatility of your choice? Young leaves of both go well in a salad of either asian or mediterranean influence. Hey, even mature leaves of both go well in a salad.

And then you can steam ‘em…

Speaking for myself Pepe, I wouldn’t bother with Collards. I grew them last year and found them as tough as leather even when they were quite young. You can cook them for ages to get them tender but they lose their colour, flavour and, I imagine, food value.
You might get a different opinion from someone else though.

they do sound versatile and thats what counts – eating them.
so good – they’ll be my newbies.
thanks OC40 – collards are out.
is anyone planting coriander and taragon this autumn ? – i think i might invest in a seedling of each.

My brother really, really wants to grow purslane (or me to grow it for him – he is lazy!). It’s really high in those omega oils you get in fish (except I don’t eat fish).

I’ve never seen seeds in the shop though, and I haven’t gotten around to ordering online yet.

If you grow some, I’d love an update on how it goes and how it tastes :)

We have here in weed proportions even the chooks and giggle pig are sick of it.
be careful for which you ask lest it becomes a curse.
We put another 2 garbags into the compost heap it hasn’t seeded yet thanks to whoever looks after gardeners.

that might have been a bit rude – sorry.
kale has plenty of antioxidants – i don’t know about omega 3 although the doc reckons i should be having fish oil. so much depends on how it tastes – its useless growing stuff you aren’t going to eat and we have never cooked or eaten it before.

the cook has expressed interest in ‘samphire’ – a kind of coastal, salty pigface which might be of culinary interest.

No pepe its definately pursalane and I have tried it in a salad and cooked but no thanks not my food group at all.

I pull it up as a weed all the time here. I’m really careful because if you drop a leaf then it will take root and off we go again. I’m not sure if this is the one that you are both after or whether it’s suitable for eating but I will send some to anyone that wants it. I’ll be glad to get rid of a bit.
