g’day grasshopper
light rain falling north of adelaide as i type.
you can smell the rain here – the crispy straw mulch will be damp by tonight.

I got 28mm of rain yesterday from localised thunder storms!! Biggest fall since March (30mm), also biggest monthly total this year (89mm) and best November total in 3 years. This year is still the lowest rainfall we have had in 5 years though.

Very humid here again on the Gold Coast. I can see that rain on the 512k radar..

Given the dense clay nature of our soil, we would appreciate a couple of days for this weeks’ rain to soak in before we are hit again…

We got a lovely downpour last night…Mr D nearly bogged the Mondeo coming up the driveway (nearly slid off)…beautiful this morning…the rain had only some lightning and a clap of thunder that made me jump…big heavy wet (you know what I mean) warm drops…

Sadly the bed where my potatoes were, is Drizabone..I mean Dry… the lucerne mulch is white…I wonder if there is a difference between packaged lucerne mulch and the sweepings from the bales I buy for the pony?

Rain here at the moment. Gosh, but its lovely. It’s been so horridly sticky all day.

I went to the shopping centre earlier; but there were no car parks; and I didn’t feel like trawling the place for a park in an car without AC, so I came home. Horrid weather. A day when you pray for rain just to feel like you’re not going to melt into the pavement.

More rain last night…I was so lucky to get all the sheets washed, out and back in just as the first drops began to fall… totally agree with MrD’s mother that a breeze is better to dry the washing than the sun, anyday…Sonny Jim surprised me with the domestic comment that “ and the breeze won’t rot the clothes like the sun does”… bless his cotton socks … Just had to dry the last load of sheets in the dryer for 10 mins as they were that close to “touch dry” that it was a shame to leave them on the line…all back on the beds by bedtime…

I’m not sure if the local horse gallops have been called off…nope, they’re on…last local gallops here for the year so I guess why not let the horses stretch their legs just before Christmas? Must have been a close call, tho’….

11mms overnight :)

for the record books, it is now 126 days since the mercury dropped below 20C at night and we have had 46 days in a row where the temperature has sailed above 30C.

currently 31C outside, 69% humidity and the barometer is falling at 1003.7

624.4mms for the year so far

and my two-bobs on daylight savings… when is Qld going to wake up, this morning sunrise was at 0445 and sunset at 1830. If you had daylight savings, you would not be woken up by the sun at 0445 but at a more respectable 0545 and you wouldn’t have to turn on your interior lights until at least 1930. You would save electricity.

I like getting up at 4:00 in the morning, you can get a lot of gardening and things done before 7:00 am then, when it is cool and not when the day still needs to lose heat…

We don’t turn our interior lights on until 18:30…what’s the go with this point? Most people I know (but not us) have their dinner at 18:00…not sure why…in the daylight…doesn’t seem normal having dinner in broad daylight…

Until they move up here, most people don’t realize that the Qld day is hot from about 8:00 am to nearly 20:00 hrs, anyway…

The thermometer hits 30 C very soon after 8:00 (if not before) and stays up there until well after sundown…stays up there all night too if the inversion breezes don’t come (also known as the 8:30 breeze, the 9 o’clock breeze, etc etc)

…and this is the general rule from about September (definitely October) to April (end of)…

not at all. You shift people’s habits and a shift occurs in the dynamics of what they do when… I’ll explain.

I get up when the sun is up. A lot of people are like that. I start work at say 0700. If I get up at 0445, then I will realise that I have a bit more time to get ready for work… I take a longer shower, I may shave, I may cook myself some breakfast, I will then go to work. I have used some fairly serious amounts of energy before I have even left for work.

I’m driving home after work, I stop at the shops and pick up something, I may see a friend at the pub and get a Cooper’s light. I drive home and it is around 1815, for safety sake, I drive with my lights on, and when I get home, the lights in the house come on, and I cook dinner inside with all the lights on, I take another shower and a shave and at 2230 I goto bed after consuming some serious amount of energy. My carbon footprint is solid.

With daylightsavings, I wake up at 0545, and realising there ain’t so much time, I take a shorter shower, I don’t shave, last night’s effort was good enough, I make cereal because it is quick and easy and I go to work. Later I return home, visit shops and Pubs and return at a time where it is still light enough to BBQ the dinner outside without lights and only after dinner do I light up the house. I shower and shave and go to bed at 2230. My Carbon Footprint is no where near as heavy as it was in example 1.

With the extra money I save, I buy a Solar Hot water System/Toyota Prius and some shares in Lihir Gold.

I’m feeling greener already :)

But no, Qbillies living in Brisvegas feel the need to have the sun rise at 0445 in the morning… introduce daylight savings to the South East and leave the tropics to having their 6am to 6pm sun show…

temperature has naught to do with it. Regardless of daylight savings or not, temp will always be the same, the sun don’t care. If you got up at 0545, the temp will be the same if you got up at 0445 (pre-daylight savings) and the 30C won’t hit until 0900 instead of the current 0800.

It is in the afternoon that you will generate 1 hour of less power usage. Your body will adapt to the different sunrise times, but you will always be inclined to going to bed at the same time….

DL saving doesn’t really affect us anymore because we’re retired but I can feel for those that find it a pain in the butt.

The energy using factor is all true but on the family side, what about the farmer who never gets to see his kids because he works from sunup to sunset no matter what the time is. He never eats dinner with them and never gets to catch up on the broadcast news. Meanwhile Mum is having a nightly battle trying to coax her kids to sleep while the sun is still high in the sky. That one I have experienced myself.

I guess living that far from the coast you deserve 31C at 2000. Try Adelaide in Feb for 36C at 0100?

ok. PM pulls soapbox out… The Farmer will work sunup to sunset regardless of his clock, regardless of daylightsavings. The Mum, well, seeing as the majority of voting/tax paying Qbillies live in the SEast Corner, the dispute of getting the kiddies to bed at 1930 instead of 1830 is very very marginal… I can understand that there maybe some kids and Farmers who live out West and the sun sets a little later there….

But as a child growing up in South Australia, where the Sun doesn’t set until 2100, I never had problems getting to sleep.

Second comment: Did you honestly enjoy listening to your kids wake up at 0445? An extra hours sleep in the morning may be more appreciative then the hassle of getting them to sleep at night. The Human Body will adapt easier to going to sleep when it is tired (I have seen kids asleep in the middle of the day) as opposed to not waking up when the sun has risen.

and my two-bobs on daylight savings… when is Qld going to wake up, this morning sunrise was at 0445 and sunset at 1830. If you had daylight savings, you would not be woken up by the sun at 0445 but at a more respectable 0545 and you wouldn’t have to turn on your interior lights until at least 1930. You would save electricity.

Joh’s legacy continues… LOL

Not so sure I shoul come into this discussion………………………but.

That one I have experienced myself.

Small childred do sleep through the day. In fact they sleep most of the day and night. Older children fight like the devil to stay out of bed, nightly. Sunhine is such a good excuse for them to use.

Your longer shower, shave and cooked breakfast was a bit thin as an argument. Specially since the shaving round here is done with a razor. I noticed you said “I may have a shave.” Not very likely knowing you.

Did I enjoy my kids waking up at 0445? Never found it a problem. We have always been early risers. It was the never wanting to get out of bed in the mornings when they got older that was a thorn in the side.

Dusting off soapbox for you!

Good call and fair comment re: shaving… and I’ll have you know, I did shave a few days ago… Might even shave again this weekend??? The beard grew throughout the chill of a Moresby winter…

You still hark on about getting the kids to bed, when in Brisvegas (land of the voters and tax payers), the evening sunset will be only 1930… not a bad time for nanights. I still stand by the fact that despite the sun not setting until 2100 in Adelaide, I still got enough Zzzzzz.

and you didn’t mind the kids waking up at 0445 because you were woken up by a sunrise and such a rude hour. You would have lurved the sun rising at a sensible time like 0545…. every other mexican does.

Boom! Boom!

They generally only last one summer of our “daylight saving”…the thing is with a little adjustment you don’t save daylight at all here…it’s a northern hemisphere invention…the siesta was a closer-to-the-equator lifestyle necessity…

N E ways, getting back to Mexicans and their demand for daylight saving in Queensland…one summer and they’re not keen on the idea any more…I’ve never met a southerner who’s lived through one summer of our “daylight savings” – whether they’ve got offspring or no – who want the scenario revisited any time soon…

we became accustomed to the crop dusters waking us up a minute past official daylight…it’s been more peacable since they introduced special tractors that do the spraying and anyway, after the first two children, one becomes accustomed to a 24/7 interrupted clock…

What’s wrong with getting up at the earlier hour? Like I said, it’s the coolest part of the day up here…you get more done and you don’t trip over much of the population getting things done…

I’ve been doing a bit of looking into sleep disorders recently (was hoping to work out why I’m always pretty tired, but I did find out that my brother has an actual sleep disorder). I’m getting the impression that sleep is more complicated than it looks – some people’s schedules just work differently, and it can be really hard or impossible to adjust without drugs. Anyone been watching Sleep Clinic on ABC2? That sleepy teenager on that last episode was amazing!!

Not putting this forward as pro or anti DLS, just a point of interest :)

it all soaked in so none of it flowed to the swale – which is my low point.
the fear now is that the grass will go beserk.

Apparently we received 30-odd mil (about 120 points) last Saturday…must have been a narrow storm, thank goodness it had our name on it…we noticed as soon as we turned into our street last night, puddles everywhere and the mud caking on the drive…

I guess I can expect a second nesting of the willy wagtails, if not the pee wits…

It’s only showers at the moment, but every little bit helps. Had a heavy downpour for about 5 minutes at 5 o’clock. Been raining now for about 10 minutes…easing off but looking at the radar it might hang around for a bit. Forecast to be more tomorrow as well

Morning all. 7.5mm yesterday, 42.5mm today. Yay, a couple of rungs in the tank! We are lucky, the landlord set up for us to get run-off from the bif shed as well as the house, so we don’t need huge amounts of rain to keep the tank topped up.

We had another 7 mm in the last 24hrs (makes it 40mm all up this week). Luckier than up north. Although we have had a few heavy showers most of the rain this week has been gentle soaking stuff. Should help repair the damage from last week’s wind.

I don’t know why anyone would think that this is unusual. Although devastating for those involved, flooding has been as much a part of Australian weather as have droughts. And floods follow droughts. Considering we have had a long period of drought, then heavy flooding can be expected.
