Computers may be evolving but are they intelligent?

The term “artificial intelligence” (AI) was first used back in 1956 to describe the title of a workshop of scientists at Dartmouth, an Ivy League college in the United States.

At that pioneering workshop, attendees discussed how computers would soon perform all human activities requiring intelligence, including playing chess and other games, composing great music and translating text from one language to another language. These pioneers were wildly optimistic, though their aspirations were unsurprising.

OK, here goes:

Being more polite is it possible to post the articles in full as being at work I have to watch which websites I view plus how much data I use.

It would be good to leave copyright, censorship, bandwidth and impoliteness in the past.

remember that one does not have to click on links, we all have the choice not to read a thread etc

I find them interesting but don’t click on the links because of the reason I mentioned above, either way I will still read them.

was a tad grumpy, but if an interesting bit of the article was posted I might do more than right click on properties and look at the address and wonder if it’s safe.

didn’t get much from that, not even a faint flicker of something interesting.

there’s design intelligence invested in computers. Variously in arrangements (systems) and applications (of all sorts of things).

What does a non-fleshy thing have to be or do to qualify.

I think as code and programs are developed for parallel processing they’ll get closer. Like they’re doing to get more speed. But speed’s not the whole story.

Lot of parallel stuff happening amongst and around the clever species. All other known life too. Humans are a bit taken by the sorta linear cause and effect way or view, in love with it.

Most of this article is a rehash of stuff that you already know. To summarise:

Programs that play checkers, chess, go.
Algebra was originally labeled AI, but now no longer is.
Language translation made little progress.
Expert systems. Success was reported with programs performing medical diagnosis, analysing geological maps, but results were neither robust nor general.
Voice-controlled personal assistants and chat-bots, but no one believes that the computer truly understands language.
Face recognition programs now work, but don’t require intelligence.
The computer program Watson famously defeated human champions in the television game show Jeopardy. IBM is now applying it Watson technology with claims it will make accurate medical diagnoses by reading all medical research reports.
There have been claims a computer will improve teaching by matching student errors to known mistakes and misconceptions.
Autonomous cars.
