A field study by Queensland’s Department of Environment and Heritage Protection in partnership with the University of Queensland has declared the Bramble Cay melomys to be extinct. The authors of the report have opined “this probably represents the first recorded mammalian extinction due to anthropogenic climate change”.

l suppose that could be defined if we live long enough to come to an agreement on when mans effect upon the climate really began.

Particularly in Australia.

I’m not sure that assigning an extinction to a single cause is a very good idea, especially when there are numerous politically motivated people looking for reasons to pour scorn on the actions and opinions of scientists.

Why wasn’t it protected?

And when are they holding the wake?

I don’t think “protecting” has saved many species. Captive breeding programs may have.

Do these people provide any peer reviewed scientific proof that the little critters were extincted by climate change?

I’m going to say no. They point to more frequent inundation events and severe storms accelerating the erosion of the cay. But it is drawing a long bow to suggest they can say for sure anthropogenic climate change was the sole cause.
