Awesome, Lucky!!
New Holland Honeyeaters are my favourite thing in the WORLD! My dad has a regular crew (along with little brown and singing honeyeaters, and silvereyes) who come to bathe in his birdbath every day. I just hooked my little birdbath up to the retic the other day, so I’m hoping that now it will stay full and they will come to use it more often. I haven’t got many nectar producing plants in yet, but I think the new hollands live next door, and they often come to pinch nesting material from a neglected hanging basket above my birdbath.
A few items down the list is to get a really big bird bath – I already have the spot worked out – where the bigger birds who come to pinch fruit can have a drink a bit higher up, away from the dog.
Thanks Bon:D I must say they are very high up in my list of birds I love to have visit.
Once of the reasons I am so excited with my outdoor wedding venue – if you go there early in the morning or early in the evening, you walk up this raised boardwalk surrounded by banksias, and the banksias are full of new hollands :):)

Reabold Hill, in City Beach – don’t know if you know it, a lot of people don’t. It’s in the middle of Bold Park and I believe it’s the highest point in the coastal plain or something like that :) And we’re having the reception at the Quarry Amphitheatre which is just next door…

Very egg-cited about the tomatoes being made into sauce and they are all from my garden. Last year we got 500 gram off the plants. No more for that whole season.
Lucky I see you’re growing rhubarb and asparagus.
When my new vegie patch is up and running I was going to use one bath tub for rhubarb and the other for asparagus. What you think? Will the grow well in the tubs?
I’ve only ever grown rhubarb years ago in the ground tho and didn’t hang around there long enough to get a good harvest :(

Well considering I’m a cereal rhubarb killer…. until I met #10 & #11.
I think they should both grow nicely in the bath tubs. Just pick a good spot for the tubs as they will be too heavy to move;P

Give it a go. Remember you can’t harvest the asparagus for about 2 years after planting them out. That is if the asparagus crowns are 2 years old when you bought them.

How much sun does asparagus need? I’d like to fill one of my garden gaps with asparagus, not sure where would be best though…

mmm yes I knew it would be some time before I get the benefits. So best to check how old the crowns are when I buy them

Most vegies…need 6 hours sun a day….go with 6 hours where possible.
Cheers :)

it’s either seeds or crowns, and crowns are usually sold as 2 yr old.

Afternoon all…
Only trouble with the rhubarb and asparagus obviously is that you won’t be able to use them for other vegies in the future. But that’s a small price to pay for yummy rhubarb and asparagus.
Hey Lucky as I was cutting the leaves off the rhubarb I picked yesterday I was thinking of your attempts at growing rhubarb a couple of years ago (the old forum days). I gather you finally managed to succeed with it.

I’ve never grown asparagus before, but I am trying with seed this year. Will be interesting to see if they survive long enough to develop crowns.

Yep that was the idea with the tubs to keep them as permanent crops. I originally thought I’d throw them away, but they’ve been so good to me, I just can’t do it.
So the plan it for asparagus & rhubarb. I’m gonna brick around the bottom of the tubs and grow herbs or something so it will also look pretty.

Sort of worked it out now AnneS.
The 2 that haven’t been killed yet, were in pots with great roots in the potting mix.

Cool. I grew sweet potato in a bathtub a couple of years ago. And before that had raspberries, but they died because I couldn’t keep the water up to them. We were working 7 days a week and during the drought had even less time than we do now for gardening. At the moment it doesn’r have anything in it. Might have to rectify that!
did the sweet potato go alright in a bathtub as we have 3 laying in the paddocks use them for water tubs for animals.
