China fits final piece on world’s largest radio telescope.
500m-wide Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST
Scientists are now starting debugging and trials of the telescope.
FAST will replace the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, which is around 300m (984ft) in diameter, as the world’s largest telescope.
FAST points towards the zenith, but can be used off axis for measurements up to 40 degrees from the vertical.

Its working frequency range of 70 MHz to 3.0 GHz is covered by 9 receivers, with the 1.23–1.53 GHz band around the hydrogen line using a 19-beam receiver built by the CSIRO as part of the ACAMAR collaboration between the Australian Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
