Subject: chicken for tea

lady forgot to lock the chooks up, I said what you feeding the foxes, to which she responded we had chook for tea, and so went the late evening conversation.

of course foxes are introduced, not native and do damage, and humans aren’t/don’t (that’s a few serious propositions followed by another that’s serious too but something more).

anyway the lady’s become indifferent to the chooks (they’re not laying and haven’t been for ages). It maybe that they feel unloved and in response to the human failing its duty of care have in return stopped giving.

i’ve been over counted them and all are there. I clucked my usual hello goodnight girls in the hope I might’ve learned a few words of chookese, along with an English translation on the off chance my chookese was not good and they understood some English.

Coming into winter, they lay fewer eggs. I have also heard that after about 3 years, they are not as reliable at egg production. Maybe the gardening forum people know more. Chickens are complicated.

Chickens and foxes are introduced, and a case can be made that humans are only native to a small area in northern Africa. Whether or not any of these do damage is a moot point. There have been fresh introductions to new areas since the beginning of biology.

50 billion chickens are raised each year, making them the most spectacularly successful dinosaur species.

Strange though that we haven’t yet selectively bred silent roosters, to eradicate the godawful noise they make in my garden, both in the small hours and random times of day.

How does a person introduce a chicken or a fox to Australia? Was the introduction formal or informal?

According to my sister, using stats from Animals Australia, chickens are the worst-treated animals for commercial purposes.

Normal chooks go off the lay during Winter. My three have not laid since about May. Then they moult and look all scrawny. Then they refeather and look magnificent. Then their combs go a lovely bright red and they start laying again. August/September, by the look of mine at the moment. Just in time for the asparagus to come up. (Hollandaise sauce from fresh eggs, local butter and lemons from our tree…mmmmm)

If you’re making soup, the older birds make for a tastier dish.
