This was a finalist for the Illusion of the Year (in Japan). I find it satisfying.

Until the start of this week I thought I had discovered a new optical illusion which I called the tilting train illusion. Then I realised that the illusion was an illusion, it wasn’t an illusion at all.

Brilliant, I love it.Until the start of this week I thought I had discovered a new optical illusion which I called the tilting train illusion. Then I realised that the illusion was an illusion, it wasn’t an illusion at all.
Can you be more specific?

Observing train tracks to the left of the Hume Highway heading north towards Albury I had noticed that the rails appeared to placed with the far rail appearing to be much higher than the near rail, compared to where the horizon was, so that a train on those rails would appear to be strongly tilted towards the observer at an angle to the vertical of about 30 degrees or so.
Yes, well,
Next time (earlier this week) I had another look at those same train tracks I realised that what I was looking at was not one set of train tracks but two, and that the further train tracks were indeed higher than the nearer ones. So. No illusion.
