If they can fit one on a ship they can sell it at Walmart.

4,500 mph = 6,600 feet per sec.
Very fast. But the .17 Remington already reaches 4,400 fps.
So, it’s a lot faster, but not astonishingly so.

The payload it delivers is also a feature.

Well, yeah, we are comparing oranges and apples here, aren’t we? I don’t suppose anyone wil be carting around the power-pack that you’d need to drive an ERG assault rifle any day soon – it’d probably look like something out of Ghostbusters.
I was reading about the naval ERG in a defence-type journal recently. I can’t work out if they’ll be silent, or still have a satisfying ka-boom when they go off. Probably the former, i’d estimate.

It’ll be the new whistling death.
SBS Saturday night Nazis recently did a thing on the nazi supercannon. As a test they did a small scale experiment with a shotgun barrel drilled with extra charges. Very simple and it did show an improvement.
they are noisy. you get a bang.

Yeah, i suppose that when anything exits a barrel fast enough, that’ll happen.
No spectacular flash, though.
yes a flash too. did you watch the video?

I’ll look again.
Does the sound carry like artillery?
Video: woo-hey! Gunnery!
I liked the range-radius part: people in Wahsington saying to themselves , “now we’ll show those bastards in Philadelphia what for!”.
“now we’ll show those bastards in Philadelphia what for!”.
nothing to fear it’s just an “experiment”.

The problem with any high speed projectile device is air drag. Air drag is so huge that it causes a rapid decrease in speed and at the same time a heating that will rapidly turn the payload into a molten blob.
That’s why I like the idea of needle guns, a needle can have a very much lower air drag than a bullet or aeroplane.

umm yeah the general sentiment of the thread is not exactly pro gun.

Although a needle is a more suitable projectile for a hand weapon. Nano-engineering it would provide options for maximising damage.
to my knowledge they pulled the pin on rail guns, said they were a waste of money given the existing options
