If you hadn’t noticed, I’m at my wits’ end. Should I try them on the snail bait?
They’re out there now expecting me to to feed them in spite of everything.

There are 23 “poultry wanted” ads within the livestock category alone, more in the pets category too. And they will take males.
My apologies for obsessing about these roosters, you must be getting almost as sick of it as I am.
I’ll just try not to think about them until the Ag department poisons man gets back to me.

All we care about is your health Mr Car. Hopefully you’ll be rid of these rascally hens asap.

You could mix the blue snail bait with chook pellets which should be available from your local livestock feed shop. However, I’d not recommend this at all.
• metaldehyde doesn’t kill everything though it does make many very ill.
• chooks probably won’t eat it or eat enough of it.

I wasn’t seriously considering it, very inhumane and not likely to be effective. I was just letting off steam.
put in a local newspaper ad free chooks
Did any of the neighbours acknowledge that they’d received your note, Mr Car?
Seriously, the neighbours do not know that you lured the chickens to your place, nor that you encouraged them to stay. That is your little secret.
As far as they’re concerned, you had nothing to do with it and have been unfairly blamed for them being there. Maybe, just maybe, they’re cringing more that you are at every nocturnal sound.
>the neighbours do not know that you lured the chickens to your place
Um, I didn’t. The mother hen just moved in with her chicks. I ignored them for weeks, expecting that they’d move on or the chicks would be taken by birds of prey etc.
Eventually I started leaving water out for them and some chick starter feed. This was of course stupid and if I could go back in time I’d chase them away pronto.

You also said it was the only poison you had lying around. Two things wrong there. If you have been using it for snails and the chooks are still crowing louder, you know the answer to that. They either don’t eat it or it doesn’t hurt them.
The other is, I bet you have a lot of poisons other than snail bait, that probably shouldn’t be fed to chooks.

Fair enough. Still, they do not know that you left water or food for them at any time.

Nobody wants feral roosters, unless they’re mad. And they’d have to catch them. Which as I’ve learnt, is very difficult.
Looks like salt fucks them up. Maybe some very salty food and a side order of salty water.

Oh. I musn’t have read it properly. ;)
I wasn’t giving the neighbours any attention. The chooks probably ran away from their place in the first place.

How do you know? And if they don’t eat it, why bother warning chicken owners about feeding chickens salty food?

If the chooks are free ranging, they will be very fussy about food that contains much salt.

Easy enough experiment I suppose, cook some rice in super salty water, feed chooks.
catching the rooster with a net from above

More than half a decade of chook husbandry.
Just had a call from David from the Agriculture Dept.
And what a fucking relief :)
He’ll be round to poison them humanely with Alpha-Chloralose. So he’s told me to keep regularly feeding them ‘cos he won’t be here until the 25th (currently in Melbourne).
He’ll add the poison to their normal oats. He said it works quickly and painlessly (it’s like a heavy narcotic) and “your problem will be over in half an hour”.
So within two weeks there’ll be no more rooster noise. I’ll put another note in the neighbours’ letterboxes telling them what’s happening.

Praise the Lord.
We had rooster in a suburban backyard and were lucky to give them to a drug rehab farm facility

You betcha.
Going to enjoy a few drinks this evening :)
Here’s the note I’ve just posted in the neighbours’ boxes:
ROOSTER UPDATE
I’ve had more attempts to catch them with no success,
but I’ve contacted the Agriculture Department
and they’ll be dealing with the problem.
David from the Ag Dep will be here to poison them humanely
with Alpha-Chloralose.
He said it works quickly and painlessly (it’s like a heavy narcotic)
and “your problem will be over in half an hour”.
Unfortunately he can’t do it until he gets back from Melbourne,
around the 25th.
So not much longer and there’ll be no more crowing.
Thanks again for your patience,
(Bubblecar, Address)
