Subject: Fire retardant Fire trucks

While reading this article that ChrispenEvan posted

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-06-28/wa-volunteer-firefighter-develops-fire-shield/6578956

I thought What would it take to redesign firetrucks to be more fire retardant ?
strip away all the plastic, vinyl, develop materials that can withstand 1000 degrees

I did a quick google on “materials that can withstand 1000 degrees”

seems that they are quite a few materials that can be used

https://www.mpg.de/790289/F001_Focus_016-023.pdf
ceramic fibers made from silicon, boron, nitrogen and carbon can withstand temperatures of more than 1,500 degrees Celsius.

and

Fire resistant polymer coatings that resist temperatures upto 1000 degree C
http://www.plastemart.com/plastic-facts-information.asp?news_id=15667&news=Fire-resistant-polymer-coatings-that-resist-temperatures-upto-1000-degree-C

perhaps a university department could get some funding and create a better fire truck

There is certainly a need for one.

Nothing wrong with developing a remote controlled fire retardant truck with multiple fire water nozzles

saw a show on tv last month where they mixed the gel out of disposable nappies with water and coated a fire truck with it, they towed it into a blast furnace for a while, pulled it out and washed the layer off.

even smallthings like gauges/switches etc on the truck were undamaged

They call them water bombers. Elvis is a good example.

Fires are fought from the ground and air

with climate temperatures doing up the risk of more fires goes up as well

we need fire retardant fire trucks fire retardant clothing and more fire fighting drones of all types

a google search on fire fighting drones = 685,000 results

Fire fighters to be using drones by the end of the year

One of Australia’s favourite new high-tech toys could have shaved hours off the emergency response to Tropical Cyclone Marcia, a Brisbane drone expert says.

His comments come as the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services looks to start using the unmanned aircraft to respond to emergencies by the end of the year.

strip away all the plastic, vinyl, develop materials that can withstand 1000 degrees.

I’ve been thinking about this since a TV program managed to destroy a supposedly indestructible truck just by driving it over a fire. And also since I learned how vulnerable most tanks are to fire. Some tanks were so vulnerable to fire that they were nicknamed “Tommy Cookers”.

Step 1 is to modify the fire truck engine to run on a much lower than normal oxygen content. Fire uses up oxygen in the air which causes all normal motors to stall. A stalled fire truck in the middle of a fire is an immediate disaster.

Step 2 is a coating on all external surfaces (possibly excluding tyres) that is extremely resistant to heat. A ceramic foam is one possibility, but another possibility is a temporary coating that uses the latent heat of phase change to safely absorb the heat without temperature increase. The latent heat method has been used successfully in two different forms in the past, using water-based sticky foams and using special thermosetting plastics.

Step 3 is to isolate the internal air in the cabin and other critical areas from the external air by shutting down all ventilation involving external.

No real need to go to step 4 which would be the replacement of flammable materials with non-flammable ones in areas already protected by other means.

a consideration with step 4 is ambient heat coming in through the cabins glass windows and external cabin

in the first article firefighters experienced the steering wheel starting to melt

and plastics self ignite at 400 + degree temperatures

a glass window material that could limit outside heat conduction would be of great value

another consideration could be fire retardant truck lyres, rubber truck wheels with a special coating of carbon ceramic fiber or something similar

or the entire Tyre made out of similar material

and this could replace rubber hoses within the engine bay and fan belts etc

make racing cars and other cars a bit safer

fighting large scale fires from the ground is a waste of time, money and effort, only aerial drones delivering water from above over all kinds of terrain

australia will spend up to 90 billion on a NBN , 50 billion on submarines, a billion dollars on a helicopter that never fly but will never spend any money or time to create a fire fighting squadron to stop damage being done on a regular basis

people are stupid

yeah

firetrucks haven’t stopped one major fire in its tracks, the most they can do is “manage” the fire

one tonne of water coming in every 3 seconds or faster can easily protect property and individuals eg a car trapped by fire can be doused as the fire front is about to strike

a special water bomb could be dropped that explodes mid air and spreads the water as a mist to absorb the energy of the fire
