At the moment, I’m not on Facebook, and I’ve been tending to avoid it. But recent events have led me to consider going on it. I’d like to know what the people here think are the pros and cons of Facebook.

For me, Facebook represents a fairly easy way to share photos and news with a large set of friends and family members.

pros: family that you don’t see regularly (interstate and overseas) connections

cons: people you see everyday telling you what they did in the last 20 mins…

filtering people and feeds out is easy.. not seeing stuff is easy too (filter the feeds you want to see)

the news is by the minute, local police news is interesting and familiar

photos belong to facebook (it’s in their terms and conditions)

just use it as a tool and not as a way of life

I’ve seen people who got along well for ten fifteen years on forums suddenly turn against friends because those friends didn’t feel as if they had to join facebook.

If you have friends and family halfway around the world it’s brilliant. I’ve got in touch with friends that I hadn’t seen for years and was able to catch up with them last time I was back in England.

Cons: I keep getting clients wanting to be “friends” on facebook but I want to keep it for real friends, however it seems impolite to refuse them.

Another downside that I found out with having a business facebook page was that it’s easy for competitors to contact your clients. I used to put up a post saying “ Had a great day shooting with so and so “ which gives the client a bit of publicity and shows people what I do and the clients does, but it makes it very easy for competitors to find out companies who use services like mine and it also gives them their contact info.

I don’t personally have enough use for it to justify being a member (I already spend far too much time on the internet), and I certainly wouldn’t want to join under my real name and be looked up by loads of people I’d rather leave in the past :)

And for the brief time I was a member (as Bubblecar), I didn’t warm to the format. Too structured and standardised.

It is great for keeping up with friends and relatives you don’t see very often. I also use private chat quite a lot. In fact I haven’t bothered with Skype or similar approved for ages.

Gets a bit tedious when people start posting too much information about trivial things or use it to share their political views – but you can just unfollow those people and ignore their stuff.

I reckon it’s got a lot going for it.

One other thing, I strictly have no work people as friends, lots of ex work friends, but no current ones. I just tell them no.

Let me expand on that. I don’t mind people sharing views I like, but when they post views I disagree with it gets tedious. I have an old friend from high school who used to post pro-gun lobby stuff. I don’t follow him any more.

You may as well. If your worried about security check your settings. After all these years if asking and guessing Facebook doesn’t have all the info it asks of me. Do tell Facebook your real birthday because it is a chance to catch up with everyone once a year when they say happies.
I get lot of enjoyment out of the distant relatives.I get lots of art world updates, news, weather and local stuff. My sister and I have a pop up conversation most days.

The downside? After Brett leaving I still see him pop up. He follows my posts. I set it up that way. There are a couple of hundred mutual friends. At some stage I am going to have cull. I am waiting till I work out what I am going to do about my name..who am I? I forget.

Yeah but if you would like to connect with old school friends or old flames (if that way inclined) you would link easier with using your name but you could then revise the privacy settings to only be seen by friends or groups like Facebook SSSF , for a good example.

I do have a ‘business page’ but I rarely use it for my business photos anymore.. mainly for the privacy issue, but some photos I don’t mind sharing and I will on that page to keep people who follow the page but are not on my personal friends lists in the loop. I’ve only ever had 2 handles here, and the other one I was pretty open that it was still me..it did cause a bit of a ruckus at the time though

:) I did the same thing once for a day. Eveyone knew it was me because the other name was very similar.

that’s the problem with the interwebs..No-one wants to own their own words

Even when anonymous, I’m still rather careful with what I say over the internet. But if I use my real name, I’m not sure I’d be able to say anything over the internet.

The good thing about trees is that today they provide shelter, shade and a home for animals and much more but in thousands of years after God turns them into coal they will provide warmth and energy in many forms.
Trees are a gift that just go on giving.

One of my fb friends posted to say her son had died and posted funeral details. She had not had much contact with him for a few years and knew few of his friends. As she tagged him in the post, the details came up in his fb friends’ feeds. That was handy, I thought.

The point I got from what Arts said was that one should not be too surprised that from the billions of posts on the internet that a few was to have such devastating consequences.

That poor woman who posted that as a white westerner she didn’t have to worry about AIDS. It was obvious (to me at least) that it was TIC, ironic and that she was sympathetic to the plight of Africans and the problems of AIDS in that continent, but the outrage bus, once boarded and revved up will not be denied.

Like others have said: use the settings to make it what you want.

I use it to keep track of things I am interested in. Minimal family stuff (my sons are not big users of fb), but my Estonian family have reconnected with me via fb.

A while back I sorted “friends” into groups and occasionally check on what’s happening with them. I think I follow a few people and may need to adjust that setting in a few places.

My newsfeed usually has art, craft, cats, other animals, weird stuff (like winged helmets), food, some politics (that may change again) and humorous stuff.

I often write a reply to things and then delete it before posting.

I also play some games via fb – official games, not my usual mind games :P

There have been a few studies about mental health and Facebook. There is mention of the sadness or jealousy as people with no lives witness those who do have lives. This bit is popping up in my life.

Mostly it does help me to feel connected. Other times it reminds me of the people in my life who don’t give a shit.

Today I did a depression spiral. It was triggered by an artist call out. It was from an organisation I would like to be represented by. It was an organisation who might be impressed with my work and my CV. However I am stuck. I have produced little work this year because I have no access to studio equipment. I still have a stack of unprinted plates. The worst bit for me is that I have done all three degrees in the name of husband who is no longer around and the CV that I was once quite proud of now seems worthless to me. All that study and research into ‘place’and ‘identity’ and I don’t feel like I have either anymore.

Just sayin..

Just sayin..

I’m not social by nature except on here and yes my life is boring and not overly happy most of the time and I have no wish to share my non-event life with the world.

We can only ever play the cards we are dealt. How we play them is the important part.

Even when anonymous, I’m still rather careful with what I say over the internet. But if I use my real name, I’m not sure I’d be able to say anything over the internet.

I’ve been watching the SBS Two series “The Internet Ruined My Life” about people whose lives have been ruined by a single post.

Honestly. Do you think your posts would be that controversial? the idiot who racially abused perris kneebone posted seriously deranged shoot. the average tic tac is wiser than that mindset – yeah?

Actually, many of the offending posts could be described as lapses of judgement. One was even the result of a typo (the person has accidently chosen the wrong emoticon). In the most recent episode, one was the result of a photo somebody else had posted.

Yeah but in science not all posters agree with your pov , like BC at times. There is not much difference in life opinions being op positional from time to time with other persons either. These differences or congruence of views within social media are the same as those experiences of any forum. You already post on public forums….no different.

I only use it for serving images, old photos to family, with just the most basic details

You can serve to different audiences.
You can have a look at stuff (as it’ll display) before going to whatever audience.
You can have a look at how it looks to others.

Has its uses.

I put a few photos up, delete the last lot, and between lots have a break and deactivate it.

But it is different in that on science forums, I’m not posting under my real name, nor to a large enough audience where what I say could go viral. The impact to the victims in the documentary didn’t remain completely online but in the real world as well.

Be confident in who you are and be confident in the words chosen anywhere you are in life ie online or offline. The feeling is empowering and stronger than any numming doubt. Take back the control , rather than fear taking the control.

On Facebook, if I look someone up, they know it, don’t they?

No.

There’s a thingy which suggests “People You May Know” and you can view their profile. They don’t know you’ve looked at it. If you want to become friends with them, send them a Friend Request. They can choose to ignore (decline) or accept. You will only know if they’ve accepted it.

You can also search for people and again, they do not know if you’ve viewed their profile.

You don’t have to provide your real name to Facebook but it has to be “real enough”: you won’t be able to register KJW. Another forumer, Ms Spock, had her facebook account canned because she couldn’t prove Spocky Vulcan was her real name! Forumer Boris doesn’t use his real name either, but his is real enough to fool Facebook. Also, people trying to find you need to know what name you’ve registered under.

Thanks Divine Angel. If I do go on Facebook, it would be under my real name. The question for me is whether to go on Facebook.

I wonder how long we can hold out? I can read the local shire council notes in the newspaper if I buy it but I can’t find them on the council website. I have to google them and find them on facebook.
