Well it’s poor form in Rio already…

The first event has already shown how rigged the competition is….

The 5km walk, every man and his dog are entered and they’re finishing in alphabetical order by country…

Khan Thinks Sharia Trumps U.S. Constitution
Grieving father who lashed out at Donald Trump wrote articles on pre-eminence of Islamic law

by Kathryn Blackhurst | Updated 03 Aug 2016 at 11:56 AM

Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim-American soldier killed in Iraq in 2004 — who lampooned Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention last week while holding a copy of the U.S. Constitution — has a history of supporting the notion that Islamic Sharia law takes precedence over the Constitution.

In the US a S&W 45 takes precedence over both.

How did China manage to con the Olympic committee into allowing them to compete as three or four separate countries? Aren’t Olympic teams supposed to belong to one country, but China has China, China Hong Kong, and China Taiwan as separate teams. I didn’t check to see if China Tibet managed to compete as a fourth.

Kosovo is there but is a disputed country, Serbia doesn’t recognise it’s independence.

On alphabetical order, I noticed that the USA marched as the country after Spain, because the names of both countries start with E. The UK marched under the letter G. Kazakhstan under the letter C. Most puzzling, though, was how on earth Slovakia and Slovenia managed to fit alphabetically between D and E.

China would prefer if Taiwan didn’t compete as a separate country, but it is fairly strongly held belief in Taiwan that they are a separate country.

It’s “Deutschland” in German, “Germany” in English and “Alemanha” in Portuguese.

I guess the Portuguese is the oldest language of the three?

Germany is known as Allemagne in French and Alemania in Spanish, relating to the old Germanic tribal groupings known as the Alemanni. But Alemannic German dialects are still in use in some areas:

What’s that about. I am only slightly interested but I know from past olympics I don’t mind following specific sports as they work up the ladder.

Seems odd. Wouldn’t think archery had such a crowded program that they’d need to start early.

the two horses i have owned were ex pacers. if you were riding on the road and a car was coming up behind you..you would pull them over to the side so the car could pass easily. The car nearly always slowed down as it went past. As soon as it went past you moved the horse back onto the road and yelled ‘GO!’ and they would the chase the car. Guaranteed to work over and over again.

Yes, if the ‘limpics get stopped now by a terrorist strike or a union strike or an all in brawl at the village because of loud music after 10pm or some other such hissyfit we win.
But having said that the spirit of the ‘limpiks is not about winning, it’s about competing and beating every other prick.

The events held on the first 2 days we typically don’t do well in.

This year had our first medal for team archery, tbh the 2 swimming medals were all that were expected for day 1

even the medals we got overnight.. a first for women’s trap and synchronised diving, not sports we are known for winning.

It’s not until the swimming really gets going that our medal count shoots up

Yes.

I’m not interested in synchronized swimming. Except for the aqua spectaculars with Esther Williams (historical interest and big production) and this film:

Men who Swim. It’s a good one.

Still too many. Luckily Channel 7 isn’t synchronising the ads across their three channels the way they normally do.

Medal standings after day 2.
1. US. 3 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze
2. China. 3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze
3. Australia. 3 gold, 3 bronze.

Remarkably good for Australia so far.

Australia’s third gold was in shooting. Catherine Skinner in “Women’s Trap”.

Looks like Australian athletes are useless at winning silver this year.

They need more training pacifically aimed at scoring silver.

I’ve been told that as much as he would’ve liked to have won and received the gold medal, he really just wanted to be in the event.

Personally though, I couldn’t really care less about the Olympics. I saw on YouTube that Channel 7 made a video of highlights from the opening ceremony, but it only goes for 2 minutes. Couldn’t have been a real great event then….

I thought I couldn’t care less about the Olympics, but actually I’ve been watching it for about 20 minutes a day.

LOL. When the Opening Ceremony was screened live I blinked and missed it. The 2 minute summary included everything of interest, including the parkour (both pretend and real), the Ninja-warrior-style climbing wall, the girl from Ipanema, the wall building and destruction (but why?) and the CO2 propaganda. I caught the whole thing later. It was as good as any Olympic opening ceremony I’ve seen. They saved money by using very simple physical props but a startling computer-generated slide-show.

The woman who won Kosovo’s first ever Olympic medal hopes the golden honour sends a message to young survivors of war that “they can do anything they want”.

Rio is Kosovo’s maiden Games, and judo star Majlinda Kelmendi claimed the historic win, beating Italy’s Odette Giuffrida by yuko in the women’s 52kg final.

Kelmendi, 25, sank to her knees in tears after the event, and then ran to hug a small group of supporters chanting “Kosovo, Kosovo!”

“I have always wanted to show the world that Kosovo is not just a country that has gone through war,” Kelmendi said, with her nation’s flag draped around her shoulders.

The movement to recognise Kosovo’s independence among sovereign nations stalled a bit. 109 nations recognise Kosovo, which is about 56% of all nations.

But sporting bodies are getting on board. FIFA and UEFA admitted Kosovo in May 2016, and was recognised as a full Olympic member in 2014.

Amazing, after day 3, Australia has still held onto third place. First two places are also unchanged.

1. US. 5 gold, 7 silver, 7 bronze
2. China. 5 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze
3. Australia. 4 gold, 3 bronze.

The gold on day 3 for Australia was women’s rugby sevens.
So the women have it, 12 Australian women have won gold and only 1 man.
At least 2 Australian women have won bronze, for synchronised diving.
I don’t know who the other two bronzes are, one each for archery and swimming. OK, three men in archery, four in swimming.

Total so far, 22 Australians have won Olympic medals, and we’re only on day 3.

It’s only the 4 gold that’s keeping us up there with the big boys, who have a lot more medals than Oz.

It’s the lack of any silver that tells the story.

I don’t know if Australia are expected to win any more gold.

There’s been a few deaths from javelins in competition, usually officials getting nailed.

We had a chap at school who twisted the javelin as he threw it and whacked himself on the back of the head. Very sore he was afterwards.

Judy got a javelin through the leg during a high school sporting event in the lower grounds.

I wonder how many people are killed by shot put.

Ooo…..in the early 70s?

Wonder if a memo circulated around the Dept of Education about safety issues?

Ukraine’s gymnastics team has some explaining to do
Nick Schwartz, FOXsports.com, news.com.au
August 9, 2016 11:41am

GYMNASTICS commentators were stunned on Tuesday during the men’s Olympic gymnastics team final when the Ukrainian national team willingly took scores of zero, which ensured a last-place finish.

In the team final, each country sends three athletes to perform on each apparatus — but Ukraine only had two athletes complete the high bar, parallel bars and floor exercise.

Ukraine sent Maksym Semiankiv to the high bar in the middle of the competition — but instead of doing his routine, Semiankiv hung onto the bar for a second, then dropped and nodded to the judges. He took a score of zero, and also scratched in the parallel bars.

Semiankiv didn’t appear to be injured, and even if he was, Ukraine could have had another member of its five-man team do a routine in his place.

According to NBC’s Andy Thornton, the team planned to throw the competition.

There are two ways you can judge a countries performance

1. number of gold and B number of medals.
The former seems to take precedence.

Interesting analysis:

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/which-countries-medal-in-the-sports-that-people-care-about/

Because the Summer Olympics occur during presidential election years, I have to pick my viewing opportunities carefully. I won’t always have the time or patience to watch much water polo or beach volleyball, sports that involve a lot of buildup — dozens of preliminary matches — all leading up to a gold-medal match that I’ll probably forget to watch anyway.1 Instead, I’m mostly interested in sports such as swimming and track and field, which provide plenty of bang for the buck, with somebody (probably an American) winning a medal pretty much every other time you look.

Not everyone agrees with this philosophy, though. Track and field and swimming are indeed very popular, ranking as the top two sports for Olympics TV viewership, followed by gymnastics in third. But soccer ranks fourth. It awards just two gold medals, one each for the men’s and women’s champions, while sailing awards 10. And yet — even if people don’t care as much about Olympic soccer as they do the World Cup or the Champions League — soccer has 15 times the Olympics TV audience that sailing does.

So, what if Olympics medals were awarded in proportion to how much people actually cared about each sport, as measured by its TV viewership? To reiterate, I’m talking about TV viewership during the Olympics, specifically. Tennis (as in: Wimbledon) is presumably the more popular spectator sport under ordinary circumstances, but in 2012, people actually spent more time watching table tennis (as in: pingpong) than tennis at the Olympics.

The data I’m citing here comes from the IOC’s International Federations Report, which listed the total number of TV viewer hours in each sport during the 2012 London Olympics. People around the world spent a collective 202 million hours watching Olympics fencing in 2012, for example. The list of the most popular sports is less U.S.-centric than you might think: Badminton, not very popular in the United States, gets a lot of TV viewers worldwide.

I have always thought that instead of penalty shootout, the goalies from each side would go off. I reckon there would be more goals scored in the 20 minutes extra time than in all the competition’s previous matches.
