Being a relative newcomer to this forum I thought it might be an idea to have a thread listing where people are, to help any newcomers understand our comments about our areas. I haven’t been able to find a similar thread, so I apologise if it has been done before.
Just a vague idea if you have privacy concerns.
I will start by saying that I live in a little town called Wandandian (renting 5 acres) about half way between Nowra and Ulladulla on the NSW south coast

Hi Bon, sandy……… I’ll swap ya for some rock/gravel :)
I found some worms in my herb patch the other day, so I must be making some progress!! So too late to swap if I’m finally managing to make some improvements :) Mind you, they’re not standard garden earthworms, but the red composting ones which must have been transferred out there along with some castings. They looked happy though!!

I’m ‘officially’ in Ipswich. To anybody who lives outside the SE corner of Qld I’m in Brisbane suburbia.
The reason for the clarification? Brisbane City Council is massive. Unbelievably big for a local government area; particularly metro council. And BCC residents are very particular about who lives in what city. For most cities the entire area is considered part of the city; but Brisbane people are different.
If I say I live in Brisbane and there’s another BCC resident in ear shot they always (always) correct me. I don’t live in Brisbane, I live in Ipswich (which is slightly west of Brisbane). In fact, the border between the two cities is about 3km east of me.
Takes me 30 minutes by train, and 20 minutes by car in quiet traffic to get to Brisbane city central, so, when talking to interstaters, I say I live in Brisbane. (It can takes several hours in bad traffic, but that’s another discussion.)
In distance, Ipswich central to Brisbane central is about 40km; about twice the distance between Perth & Freo; half of Melbourne to Geelong; and a bit further than Sydney to Parramatta. Bit silly really that I can’t say I live Brisbane; but we all know that Queenslanders are a bit strange.

lol, I’m a bit of a mixed bag then..born in Kingaroy Qld, grew up in the S.A outback, but lived in Vic since my late teens. Old is where my family is, Vic I love and is where my kids will live.
But my heart is in the SA outback.

As far as it goes Broken Hill goes on South Australian time.. and if one divided Australia into time zones it looks a different place. I suppose many Australians believe they are on another planet to the rest of Oz since places can be so far away from anywhere else.

Emerald, CQ…
on the outskirts…20 acres of self mulching cracking black clay…only about to 1 metre down at the most, then rotted granite…about the only “hill” in Emerald…previously brigalow yellowwood shceperell (F7) scrub….
Some red brigalow clay at the front of the block, nice stuff, but the house is on the black clay…drainage not really a problem, and it responds well to gypsum…
I believe the addition of iodine (hope I’ve got that right) makes the soil more productive???
If our place ever floods, then it’s bye bye to Emerald town…views from the top of the hill are awesome (to locals)…can see for 60 miles or more…
we have a blue gum which I have, for 14 years, called a stringybark…can see it from all angles…sometimes the pink galahs roost there for a week when they’re passing through…
We are the notorious citrus blackspot area, as in the canker drama of a couple of years ago has meant we have not been “allowed” backyard citrus trees for about 2 years now, but in Feb this year we can have them again!!!
I am already hanging out for limes, both plain and Tahitian and lemons: oranges if I must but not keen on them…

Queensland is decentralized… this means our main coastal centre is Rockhampton and not Brisbane…ditto Townsville for Mt Isa etc…
I remember at UNE, I was shocked when I asked “what is your major centre?” to be told “Sydney”…then when I got on the train, I realized what the “centralized” aspect was all about…
In Qld, having lived in Towntown (as Pain Master calls it) for a few years, I can assure you that these centres may well believe that the governments of the day treat them as out of sight, out of mind…it’s frustrating to live with this “where are you on the map again?” attitude of the Qld govts…to listen to the news you are led to believe that Queensland is all about the south-east corner…southerners (including those from the SE corner of Qld) tend to think they are heading to an exotic destination when travelling to Mackay, even…

Sorry, I am notorious for taking photos and then not uploading them…might see what I can find on Google if it doesn’t give too much away…some members of this forum will remember my cows Daisy, Molly2 and Annie (little b*ai*ch) and they are in the photo…
Sorry…
cool.
MY cows are gone tho’, I miss them very much (except Annie)…they are now happily socialising and reproducing on MrD’s brother’s moo-farm….they were costing too much to feed during the drought…

How long does it go for and what do they do with the fruit afterwards? Seems a waste!

Goes for a couple of weeks and I’ll have to enquire where he food goes. Probably to pig food or something.. However there is always a huge wastage factor where fruit is concerned. Imageine thousands of truckloads of grape juice spilling on every bend or bump in the road. At least the citrus is now transported in a fashion that avoids spilling it off open trailers.

promotion is it yes. No one in their right mind would want to come here if it wasn’t for the wine and the orange juice. Not to forget the Pizza and Ecstasy tabs in cans of tomatoes

I cornered the chooks just now in their pen and hosed them down.
I’ve had visitors ,young mums and babes, who don’t have air cons. Fed them all, and they are starting to go back home.
And now it’s just us, hubby wants us to go out for tea. Theres a new flash restaurant up the road.. will try that one :)
I just want a giant iced coffee. Preferably tipped over me.
39 C tomorrow too.. then a cool change. I’ll be hanging out for that.

The Coopers Sparkling Ale which won every category during the World Cup of Beer which was held the same year the Aussies hoped they’d make it to the finals.. is 5.8% alch/vol.. which isn’t too bad for an ale.

Not dark no.. a true full strength ale with a yeasty taste.
top fermented.. so has a sediment which clouds the beer if stirred .. and bartenders will roll the bottle across the bar for you.

No problem to implement that (although I’m quiet busy over the next month with assignments). Where do you think it should appear? After the user’s name? When you hover on the name? On a separate profile page that you can bring up by clicking?

Need to talk to those whom administer the site.. or.. we all need to register changed names with an added locality suffix.

I like the idea of a profile page – that way we can update it whenever we move etc. But it might also be nice to have something shown in brackets after your username?
I guess it depends how exact you are – what about having your state in brackets after your username, and then anyone who wants more detail can go to your profile page?

really ? – impressive
i vote for
- after the users name
– it needs to be changeable by the user – since we all move houses from time to time.
the profile thingy is complex – the hovering is too high tech imo.

yeah its need to be able to be changed how about a profile page which where you are from and state after your name and its able to update from your profile page, some people may not want there location so may be they can use the biggest town near them. only a Grassy on here knows where abouts woodvile is.

I think a page that holds details of members, with the option to hide the info, is the way to go. Put a “Members” link above and people can go look there for more info if they wish, or to update their own details (would need password confirmation or something so that they can’t be tampered with by unfriendlies.) Maybe a PM function too? So people can contact each other without revealing their email addresses in public.

As I envisage it, the profile pages would be linked from the usernames in each post. Minimal location details (maybe just state) could be displayed after the usernames. That sort of thing is easy to fiddle with to get it right after it’s set up, so there isn’t really a need to come to a consensus now. I was just wondering if there was a popular option, or if there were any other ideas.
Private messages has been something I’ve wanted to put in for a while. I’ll bump it up “the list” a bit :)

Thanks I went through some old and new threads and pictures and also found where you all come from…really grouse (that shows my age) (but then some of you have the advantage of actually sightin me!!)
there are some brilliant gardens out there, and no matter where we have come from seems we had to deal with a really crappy season either without or with too much water.
I wonder how the Southerners coped with the heat and dry? Did you do anything that really worked?
And thanks RB I checked out bazman on ALS, some very good thoughts, oh to have acres to play with..
goodnight M this is becoming addictive!

That reminds me, one of my neighbours wants me to get the bees out of his black poly compost bin because they have weighed the lid down so much it has bent backwards.

I have Native bees and the link was sent to me a few days ago, but I haven’t got around to looking at it. I’d like a European bee hive one day as well. The native bees are a bit fussy about what they’ll polinate.

won’t the European bees push out the natives?

Yes if you want your own vege seeds etc.. then you may well need Euro bees.
but it is a lot of work containing swarms before they move off.., usually necessitates you becoming an honey supplier to pay for the work.

I don’t think they’d like the natives hive, but I wouldn’t be getting any without researching that first anyway. It’s only something I’d like to do if we moved onto acreage.

I’d make sure they weren’t going to kill them first.
