Am rewriting census questions for my own enjoyment.

Made me wonder, what are the five (or so) most common transmissible diseases in Australia?

Fear and loathing of harmless bureaucracy, is Number 1, probably.

I like this question because it opens a can of worms LOL. There are at least two common transmissible diseases, lice and infectious warts, that are missing from Wikipedia’s list of infectious diseases.

You’ll struggle to find any hard stats on such things I think, health departments generally track significant transmissible diseases such as meningococcal, influenza, hepatitis et al but there’s no such monitoring for things like the common cold, community acquired pneumonia etc.

The common cold would have to be number 1.

Lice are not a disease. They’re a parasite.

I think you could argue that when Lice infect a hooman or similar, they are a disease.

Tinea fungal diseases also count as transmissible diseases.
So are cold sores.

I’m far from sure about whether warts count as transmissible diseases, some of them certainly are, but all?

Also, some ulcers are, but all?

Roundworm is a common transmissible disease. Hence “can of worms”.

If dandruff isn’t transmissible then why treat it with zinc pyrithione, which is a fungistatic and bacteriostatic?

I’d like to define “disease” as any medical condition that is being treated. That is the only unambiguous definition that makes sense.

Medical stuff is generally defined in terms of disease and disorder. F’rinstance, myopia is not a disease, it is a disorder. It’s a fine line sometimes.

disease: a definite morbid process often with a characteristic train of symptoms

disorder: a derangement or abnormality of function; a morbid physical or mental state

Ref: Dorland’s pocket medical dictionary.
