Much ado about nothing: Astronomers use empty space to study the universe

A lot of information contained in cosmic voids, study suggests

An international team of astronomers reports that they were able to achieve four times better precision in measurements of how the universe’s visible matter is clustered together by studying the empty spaces in between.

It is the way the Aborigine viewed it. Science is following their lead.

Not necessary for them, no. However, they did think of it first.

Specifically, yes but they were amazed at the way the aboriginals viewed the heavens and did start looking at the empty space after that.

these guys are looking at voids in the universe, the aboriginals would not have been able to see these with the naked eye.

You didn’t need to tell me that. The precis is that astronomers did spend time with aborigines in the deserts of WA I think. Where they did find that there was indeed a new way to look at the sky that had been practiced for tens of thousands of years before we started studying the skies scientifically by measuring the points of light.

we all know that. The point is that the aborigine concentrated on the space between the points of light that were visble.

That as a result of the contact with aboriginal astronomy, the astronomers realised that yes, they had never before thought that the otherwise empty spaces meant anything other than distances between points.

I know but they hadn’t thought of looking into the dark space for answers before or at least that was what was implied in the program.

Nevertheless, our science discovered new places to look from listening to them.

1. I very much doubt that’s where they got the idea from.
2. No-one knows how long aboriginal mythology has had its current form.
3. No-one knows what mythology other tribal groups had, or when they developed ideas about what’s going on outside this planet (other than we know it started in many areas many thousands of years ago)
4. You can respect aboriginal culture (and other non-urbanised cultures) without making ridiculous exaggerations of their influence on modern science.

You’re all missing the point.
Why four times?

> They were looking for tiny deviations in void behavior that conflicted with general relativity, and they found none. So Einstein’s theory of gravity holds true for now

Not all that surprising, nut nice to know.
