I’m looking for a strong, well-made cleaner with reliably powerful suction in the $200-300 price range.

Here’s an actual Hoover that might be good, or not. I don’t have a pet hair problem, I have a human hair problem (my own, which quickly builds up in the rugs etc and needs powerful suction to remove).

No, just shorter. She took heaps off but it’s still long enough for a ponytail.
Very mixed consumer reviews on that Hoover :(
From a glance at various reviews, it seems many of these bagless vacuum cleaners (which are now the standard type) give disappointing performance.
We are using one of these. Mr buffy got it online from Godfrey’s some months ago, but he didn’t pay this much for it at all:
http://www.godfreys.com.au/vax-vx6-floors-pets-liftoff-upright-vacuum?gclid=CIj0yazR1M4CFRaTvQodK20Hxw
It’s quite good and I do appreciate not having to buy bags for it. The capacity is perhaps a bit small, but it is so easy to empty that doing it two or three times during a whole house clean is not that onerous. And the cord does not have a retractor, you have to wind it up and you have to hoik it out of the way while working. I have a bigger Vax at the practice, which did cost this sort of money quite a few years ago and is heavier. Still easy to use though.

True.
I must be a tightarse, in only spent seventy bucks for a bagless type, does the job okay, but then I have polished timber floors and rugs, not carpet.
Electrolux were always good.
I have a Miele here in use as ithe electrolux is too big by comparison.

You will probably find that now the hair issues are not what they once were.
FWIW, I use a Dyson and have been very happy with it.

The robot ones work well on that.

I currently have an $80 something one which I bought as a stop-gap when my old Electrolux died, and it’s crap. Very poor suction, horrendous noise, always falling over etc.
We also have a Dyson at the practice. Can’t now remember which one is at Casterton and which one is at Hamilton. I can’t see a picture of the Dyson online. We’ve also had a Miele barrel type here over the years. None of them have been bad. The last one that died was a Shark. I quite liked that upright, it was lightweight. But you did have to buy bags for it. And this new red Vax sits lower and goes under things better.

Godfrey’s seems to be the only place offering that one, and it’s bit too expensive at that price.
I haven’t come across a vacuum cleaner with a built in light in the hose section
So you can see cobwebs under the ceilings
I tie a small led torch around the vacuum cleaner hose
Looks like the Shark has metamorphosed somewhat.
Quiet vacuum cleaners are hard to find too.
Thought this cheaper Vax might be a decent buy:

OK I’ll get that eBay one (next week when the money’s in PayPal). Only $10 cheaper than from the Miele shop, but given that Miele themselves have reduced it from $450 to $299, it’s a pretty good price :)
Attachments that can stay on
Self motorised wheels

No immediate recommendations, only general advice.
1. Just because it sucks when new doesn’t mean that it will still suck 1 year or even 6 months down the track. So get one that is more powerful than you think you need.
2. Go for the quietest one you can afford. That generally means they’ve taken the engineering seriously, and noise will stop you from enjoying the vacuuming.
3. No advice on weight. Light weight ones have the advantage of ease of use but heavy ones tend to suck better years later.
Better advice from Mrs m.
1. Never buy a vacuum cleaner from Big W.
2. I’m a big fan of Kinchrome workshop 1200W wet and dry.

I have this model and i can definitely recommend it over the previous Big W el cheapo I used to wn.
If you can find one on sale for $300 then get it, mine was about $420.
Bags are not cheap though, around about $20-25 for a pack of 4.

This eBay quotes a mere $113. This vacuum cleaner is intended for industrial use, which makes it perfect around the home, truly.

Jolly good. This one’s $289, free delivery. Price has gone down because I think it’s now being phased out.
Can the bags be emptied? I would often empty and re-use the disposable bags that I used with the old Electrolux, when I didn’t have new ones in the drawer.

Price is tempting, but not having had experience of that kind (and this Miele one being similar to but more modern than the Electrolux model that served me well for over a decade), I might stick with the Miele choice.
But I’ll probably look up more reviews before actually buying.
Get a Dyson in your price range.

Hmmn. It would be possible but fiddly. There is no zipper or such device to allow for a quick empty. They are intended for a single use, but you could shale them out in the bin if you wanted to.

Well there ya go. I bought mine about a year ago. At the time I couldn’t find any non-genuine bags on sale within Australia. I ended up buying in bulk about half a dozen boxes hoping they would las me some time.
Well, if you can find a Miele in your price range, it’s about the best you’ll get for the money.
Electrolux were always good – when they were made in Australia. I still have on old one that i use in the shed and garage, and the ability to plug the hose into the exhaust port makes it fabulous for inflating air beds and similar, and it acts like an air-broom when sweeping sawdust and such away.
In the house, we have a Dyson these days. Had it for about 8 or 9 years. I had to replace the motor in it, but got an inexpensive replacement from a chap near Wollongong via E-bay. Works fine since (2-3 years). Does a jolly good job in the house.

The only Dysons in my price range seem to be a hand-held one (obviously unsuitable for floors) or a rather feeble-looking cordless stick one with only 20 minutes usage on a battery charge.

My old Electrolux takes bags. I got around the paper bag thing by using the cardboard ‘front plate’ from one of the paper bags as a template, cutting its image out of thin MDF, and attaching a cloth bag to the MDF cut-out. Now, i can use the cloth bag, or paper bags, depending on the situation.
I don’t mind bags, and my experience with this cheap shitty bagless one has put me off the concept.

I think you will be happy with the Miele.
Bagless vacuum cleaners are over-rated anyway. Yes, I have been happy with my Dyson (which must be 10+ years old by now). It does not lose suction, as claimed. But having the best filtration system amounts to nothing when it’s being emptied and dust is flying everywhere. I always empty it outside ensuring I am upwind of it and whenever possible, ask Mr Speedy to empty it.

Yes, You will not be disappointed with the performance of the Miele in terms of powerful suction and a good solid feel about it.
I found the emptying and shaking (banging) out the filters on the side of the wheelie bin a bit tedious. Decided to go back to bags.

Yes one would think some effort could go into minimising the dust cloud when emptying
Some kind of washable dust filters
Or some kind of bagless system then into a dust bag for the bin

It seems all vacuum compaanies need to go that one step further with dust disposal into the bin
take it outside, empty container carefully and blow out the filters with your air compressor. downwind is the sensible way.
the only mildly annoying thing about the Miele is that there is half second delay between hitting the on button and the machine whirring up. Just enough of a time gap to make you start reaching out to hit the button a second time. Before you get used to it.

You mean the bin compartment of the vacuum cleaner?
I only ever wash out ours with water. There is a HEPA filter in there somewhere too, which is washed every now-and-then.

I’ve never had a Dyson, only the cheap bagless systems. All of the ones I’ve had you emptied straight into the wheelie bin, and then had to shake (or bang) out the filter.

I had one of those. It was useless.
FTR I have a Dyson. It works very well except when Mr Mutant sucks up coins, which get stuck in the turbo head. It happens often, so he’s not usually allowed to use it. The only issue I have with the Dyson is that it has a very small capacity in the chamber, so needs to be emptied frequently, twice just in the living room. Again, Mr Mutant ignores the “maximum level” so another reason he’s not allowed to use it :)
I had that Miele and I hated it. It didn’t have strong enough suction and the bags were a major PITA. Then again, you’ve seen Jasmine. She sheds a lot and I need a very good vacuum to clean up after her (and now, a messy toddler as well).

Same as Mr Speedy, except he is allowed to use it, albeit with close supervision.
Actually, he is made to use it, despite his ongoing efforts to achieve a permanent banning.

Hmm, well party_pants likes his, and the reviews I’ve looked up all seem to be favourable and usually praise its powerful suction. Maybe you had a dud or as you say, maybe it’s Jasmine’s fault :)
I’ll be ringing the older sister today and ask what machine she currently has (although it’s likely to be well above my price range :)).

Again, Mr Mutant ignores the “maximum level” so another reason he’s not allowed to use it :)I had that Miele and I hated it. It didn’t have strong enough suction and the bags were a major PITA. Then again, you’ve seen Jasmine. She sheds a lot and I need a very good vacuum to clean up after her (and now, a messy toddler as well).
…and I can’t help thinking that having to empty a bagless one twice for each room would be a more major PITA than using high-capacity bags.
(The cheap bagless one I currently have has to be emptied at that sort of rate even when there’s very little visible dust in it).

He must be gutted!
Nah he’s a rare breed in that he wants the house tidy.
The Kincrome mentioned above is now marketed as a vacuum cleaner for garages, formerly as an industrial vacuum cleaner. That’s why it’s so cheap, and so good. It’s surprisingly light weight. We first found out about it when it was being used in a car repair place where the father of a friend of my daughter works.
We rejected both Miele and Dyson as being too effing expensive. Perhaps not every Miele is too expensive but all the best ones are. Hoover used to be good 50 years ago, but has got worse every year since then – avoid. Reviews of vacuum cleaners in Choice are totally useless, I did look them all up.
Vacuum cleaners are like watches. It’s far too easy to buy a good-looking dud.
The problem with reviews in Choice is that lots of brand new products will perform well at first, but develop various problems a few weeks or months later.
Reviews by ordinary consumers who’ve owned the product for a while are generally more reliable, as long as you read a decent selection of them.
As a last throw of the dice I called my sister to see if she’d talk me into getting the same one she has, but she did the opposite. In fact she spent the next 10 minutes ranting about how bad it is (a Nilfisk which she’ll be replacing soon because of its various inadequacies).
So the Miele it is.

Does it have a builtin led light in the hose section, to see the cobwebs under the ceiling?

No, you’ll have to put that in their Suggestion Box.

I vacuum my ceiling cobwebs and I haven’t smoked pot since last century some time.
Maybe if you talk your sister into getting one too you might get a commission…
I have a bagless ivac.
Best way to minimize the dust cloud when emptying is to shake it into a plastic shopping bag, a biodegradable one preferably.

You might be surprised if you shine a torch around the corners of the ceiling and where the walls meet the ceiling.
I can vacuum stoned, in fact i usually do the housework that way.

I can see perfectly well the walls and ceiling just by opening the curtains or switching the light on.
I also have a soft broom used for the purpose of clearing cobwebs

Yes long handed feather dusters, they work good too.

Not really an option for me, with wooden floors and several large rugs plus the cement floors in the built-on section.

we have a mix of cement sheeting, laminate floorboards, underlay and tiles here, eventually it will just be laminate and tiles, fine for just broom and mop.
we do have 4 large rugs standing in the hallway to go in the rooms though, so the vacuum will be needed for that..
and to keep up with 2 shedding animals…
People, people, people….there is such a thing as a cobweb broom. They even come with extendable handles….

I have both types. The first one is good for running across the top of pelmets to get the dust down, as well as its purported function of bringing down the cobwebs.

I tend to leave the top of pelmets to their own devices :)
It’s really only visible cobwebs I bother with and with the vacuum cleaner (if you’re tall enough and the tube’s long enough) it’s just a quick whoosh to suck them safely away, with no brooms to clean. But those cobweb brooms would be handy for the outside of the house.

Talk about dumbing down the populace. How long since has there been a need to realise and invent? How long since have the broom makers gone to the wall without anyone seeing the need for actually inventing a better mousetrap or spider web broom?
Have been looking at our new Kincrome. 1250 Watts.
It has three filters. First, a washable cloth bag filter to catch big stuff, and dump it in a 20 litre tin drum. Then a foam air filter. Then a paper air filter that looks exactly like the type of drum-shaped air filter in a car. The bag filter is just dumped in the washing machine for cleaning, along with clothes and other stuff. You can hose out the tin drum to clean it properly.
Does a Miele have three filters? Is the bag filter safe to wash in a washing machine? Does it have a 20 litre rubbish catchment?
Does a Miele have 1250 Watts of suction? Answer – it has more, typically 1800 Watts, 1400 to 2000+ Watts.

As these devices were used by my great aunt, who was born in 1902 I don’t think they are a recent invention. I have her old cobweb broom. I doubt they were always plastic bristles, but they are way better than a hairbroom for cobwebs. And you just take them outside and wash the webs and arachnids out of them, leave the broom to dry and there you go.

the thing is, you can already buy a vacuum with ‘headlights’ they used to advertise it on morning tv infomercials, so you aren’t inventing anything new.
If that is what you want, fork out the money for it and stop complaining.. don’t let it keep you up at night…
I don’t remember ever wishing for lights on the vacuum cleaner. I just go over the floor with the thing and shove it under furniture (or move the furniture). I don’t need to see under there. And I am much too short, living in houses with 12 -13ft ceilings to have even considered using it for cobwebs…

But not on an ordinary broom…too heavy. The extendable handle on the cobweb broom is great and the thing is lightweight.

It was always a clever invention.. like the mousetrap.
I read about vacuums sometime back as I was going to get a Dyson but my reading put me off. The below is pretty much a good summary after spending to many hours researching (on now most of that reading has been forgotten too). Though it is probably not important in your buying remember suction may not be as important as air flow. Shark are an in-house vacuum recommended because of the large profit margin on them.
In the end I stuck with my old Miele that has been going for around 20 years.
Miele for canisters
Riccar for uprights
Hoover for budget machines
Sanitaire or Royal for commercial machines
Dyson if you just can’t be talked out of a bagless machine.

Jolly good.
My sister and I agreed that bagless machines replace a minor inconvenience with a lot more inconvenience.
Fans of extreme cleaning like Bubblecar could get one you strap to your back like the commercial cleaners.
If you skim down that reddit thread there is a lot of really good info. Basically choose a vacuum that meets your needs.

I agree, it’s a scam.
Just bought the Miele. Realised I could pay by bank deposit, so I won’t have to wait for PayPal’s usual time-wasting.
I needed my Miele today. Yesterday i dropped the ceiling which had shredded paper mixed with borax for insulation. Ended up with a foot of this insulation all over the floor. Tonight, the new ceiling is and all the insulation is on the garden or in the miele.

When I first brought home the Dyson I was impatient to use it. Now, when you need a new vacuum cleaner, chances are that the old one has died and the place really does need a vacuum.
The Dyson has a clear barrel and we happened to have visitors at the time.
My mistake became obvious within the first 3.5 seconds.
Not a good look :/

This is a traditional bag barrel-type vacuum cleaner – you just replace the filters every now and then.
