Pete Evans claims dairy removes calcium from bones: What do the doctors say?

Medical experts have reaffirmed that calcium is an “important building block for healthy bones” in light of claims by celebrity chef Pete Evans that dairy removes calcium from bones.

Doctors have criticised the chef’s dietary advice, including the medical director of Osteoporosis Australia and head of medicine at Monash University, Professor Peter Ebeling.

Dr Ebeling said Evans was quoting old data which said calcium might be acidic and cause bone resorption.

“We know that’s not true,” Dr Ebeling said.

“He’s absolutely wrong in this regard.

In a study published in 2013, Dr Ebeling and his research team found calcium had a direct correlation to health outcomes.

While they acknowledged there “was a lack of accepted strategy for osteoporosis prevention in Australia”, the study cited recommendations agreed upon by 120 medical and health experts to reduce the personal and economic costs of osteoporosis.

probably been known since before WW2, and in other ways before the word calcium, you know like dairy, cows milk, cheese, breast milk.

sometimes this shock-horror theme has me wondering of the extent people are intentionally seduced with the fear of suggestibilty(through associations), or the fear that all civilization will collapse should the most basic things not be constantly reinforced.

A good starting point as to why it maybe so is to think why TV need use reiteration so much. I’d expect some of it is so when you turn it off there’s this sort of fear that your reality might melt away or become corrupted should you not reindulge frequently.

Dunno

Ok. I seem to have never watched any of his shows, nor read his books or regular columns.

Not really, I just watch a lot of live sports on TV instead of cooking shows.

… Okj – maybe just a little bit of Nigella every now and again.

Possibly p_p is able to make intelligent choices or it’s just because he prefers to watch sport over cooking shows.

Probably because I have no wife or children to seize control if the remote. God has been unkind to me in that.

Strangely, I have a husband and I have never seized control of the remote. Funny how some people don’t fall neatly into stereotypes. (He usually falls asleep with the remote in his hand and I just take it to turn to tv off :P )

Pete Evans has a lot of strange ideas about nutrition. He is an outspoken “expert” on paleo and caused controversy last year when he released a book about paleo for kids, including a recipe for a “paleo formula” which was made from bones and contained no actual dairy. Obviously, this is highly dangerous to feed to a baby.

One doesn’t need to be very bright to be a celebrity because the majority of the audience isn’t either.

All that is required is shameless enthusiasm.

Nutritionists.

I mean obviously there’s a relativity of wrong, but saying dairy reduces bone calcium is the literal opposite of the truth.
