Emotions and intelligence

Does a high number of emotions make a species intelligent, the higher number of emotions the more intelligent the species becomes?

There might be some general and very fuzzy correlation.

More emotions probably works both ways can make you more empathic or more uncaring as a species

I don’t think you can count number of emotions. You can discriminate between emotions and divide emotions up into different subclasses, but I don’t think that’s the same as counting them.

I’ve seen a film that illustrates that even a single celled Eukaryote can show fear in a way that is instantly recognisable. By cringing.

I’ve also noticed a correlation between anger and physical movement. Immobility suppresses anger. In animals, anyway. I’ve never known if plants can get angry.

There is also a connection between “stress” and suffocation, ie stress causes slight oxygen deprivation.

The emotion “shock” is well known in medicine to be identical to loss of blood.

the propositions I suppose are

- do more intelligent species have a greater range of emotions
- is the greater range of emotions in some part responsible for greater intelligence

I would think it would mainly apply to social animals that require more detailed communication with each other to have the greatest number of emotions requiring expression. However these highly social animals also are usually the most intelligent.
