Hi folks – a couple of IT questions.

(1) I inadvertently downloaded 2 programs – Slim Cleaner Plus and DriverUpdate. Are they worth keeping? Any downside to uninstalling them? I’m not sure how they came to be on my desktop. Should I be concerned?
(2) I like the look of a program called Irfanview. It is a free raw format viewer and allows limited editing. Any concerns with downloading this program?

Thanks in advance.

I dimly remember using IrfanView many years ago. It’s popular and seems safe to download and well-respected:

Ifanview has long been in use. Don’t know much about the other two but the question is always about the source.

Searching on google indicates for Slimcleanerare are not favorable

Slimcleaner
Once installed it claims that several issues have been detected on your computer and you must pay to remove them. SlimCleaner Plus is technically not a virus, however it does have a lot of malicious traits such as rootkit capabilities and browser hijacking.

driverupdate

$30 a year

http://www.howtogeek.com/198758/never-download-a-driver-updating-utility-theyre-worse-than-useless/

I would stay away from both

for cleaning I would use Ccleaner

for drivers

make a list of drivers for things you install

then keep them up to date manually

The scribbly gum tree is a eucalyptus tree with a very smooth, pale trunk. The distinctive brownish ‘scribbles’ are made by the larvae of the tiny scribbly moth. These larvae are harmless to the tree and, though found on many eucalypts, it’s only in a few varieties – commonly E.haemostoma, E. racemosa or E.sclerophylla – where the signatures become the most pronounced feature of the tree

Scribbly-Gum – by Judith Wright

The cold spring falls from the stone. I passed and heard the mountain, palm and fern spoken in one strange word. The gum-tree stands by the spring. I peeled its splitting bark and found the written track of a life I could not read.

As a general rule, if you’re not sure how they came to be on your desktop, get rid of them pronto.

It’s surprising how different the flora is over in WA. There are, for instance, no scribbly gums here.

It’s funny … I assumed that bob would know well what a scribbly gum was, but was wondering why the forum was called that.

Irfanview is marvellous. I use it at least twenty times each week. I don’t know the other two.

For instance, the image on “help please forum format problem” was created with three applications of irfanview. “printscreen” copies desktop to clipboard, ctrl-v in an irfanview window converts the clipboard into an image, then “crop” on irfanview changes to required size. I displayed two irfanview images and then “printscreen” ctrl-v to make a third image. Then crop, save and post on the web.

The most useful commands on irfanview, the ones I use all the time, are:

Edit : Crop selection – I use this several times a day, on every image that gets inserted into Word or posted to the web.

Image : Auto adjust colours – I use this on every digital photograph I take, it always makes the photo look more professional and, well, nicer.

Image : resize/resample – for image size reductions for use on web and in Word.

Image : rotate left and rotate right – for photos.

Image : custom/fine rotation – apply to every scanned image to get it exactly upright.

Image : decrease colour depth + edit palette – to make those ‘black & white’ scans lose their greyness, I use this a lot when I get emailed scans of sheet music.

Image : sharpen – again to improve B&W images that have been scanned, emailed to me, or downloaded.

irfanview is by far the best image software I’ve ever had, better than Photoshop.

A forumite made a mirror of Scribbly Gum and named the mirror Scribbly Bum.

On IT questions, what’s the best way to revitalise an old desktop?

Eg. Vacuum interior, CCleaner, which new anti-malware, how to delete files created or damaged by crashes, stop unwanted programs running automatically in the background, uninstalling unused software, getting rid of existing malware.

the best way to revitalize a old desktop is to take out the old hard drive, put in a SSD drive

install the OS, then OS updates, then drivers, then apps, then image it to a backup drive
