Subject: Cough mixtures
I know I’ve asked this some years ago, but I need poik’s expertise again. I’ve almost run out of my hoarded mix that has pseudo eph in it. Yes, it is way past its use-by date. I presume none of the cough mixtures actually contain pseudo eph any more?
Do you have a site where I can look at the ingredients at least some of the mixes on the market? The codeine/phenylephrine/pseudo eph/guaiphenesin/ammonium chloride in the old Chemists’ Own Expectalix has always been a good combination for the occasional times I need to use such a thing. I may have to combine other things to get that mix now though.
I don’t use a lot of this stuff, tends to be years between requirements. So things change by the time I actually finish up a bottle. I need to plan…
And yes, I know they don’t stop the cough. But that stuff does help me sleep for some reason.

Once upon a time people thought they did. But more recent research tends to say they don’t.

I think it is largely the analgesia and euphoria that makes you not worry so much about the fact that you have a cough

Unfortunately I am a bit too experienced with coughs.
Go to the doctor. Always the first port of call…..you know this.
Get a codeine-based cough mix. Maybe you can buy them over the counter in Oz. I can’t do that here.

Most of the pseudoephedrine/codeine liquids aren’t made anymore. In fact, I don’t think there is any codeine containing liquid cold and flu remedy available atm.
Robitussin Cold, Cough and Nasal decongestant liquid PS (pseudoephedrine/Guaiphenesin) + Rikodeine (dihydrocodeine) + Senega and ammonia (for the NH4Cl) . Good luck getting the first two, going by previous forumers experiences, you’ll either have to sell a kidney or hand over your unborn…

the make your muscles around your ribs spasm later cough.
My ribcage is going to have to convalesce. It’s very annoying, and hurts!
(and no, it didn’t stop me starting the mower and mowing for an hour or so. Never let your body get the better of you. Snooze this afternoon on the cards though)

OK….so I’ll “need” to drink blackcurrant syrup for the Vitamin C and sweetness and proper (Cascade) raspberry for the anti-bug effects and sweetness. Take a Sudafed for the pseudo-eph. Take a panadol for the painkiller bit. (I haven’t used codeine except in the cough mixture since I was a teenager when we used panadeine (otc) for period pain) What have I missed?
:)
Actually, most of this cold has passed. But who is to say someone else won’t offer me one again? I’m a little out of practice, but it all comes back.

I’ve spent the morning making the house look like it isn’t the realm of a hoarder of all sorts of rubbish dumped on everything. Now at least I can walk around and feel like cleaning other parts. However, there is the same to be done with respect to hoarding weeds and unpruned uncared for outdoors but hey at least I moved the old cieling remnants to on top of some of those weeds.

Sorry to report, but modern cough medications are all useless in my experience.
I just go for Fisherman’s Friend. And even that is nowhere near as good as it was.
