How many Emotions Do Humans Have?

I cannot find a definitive answer

Brain scanner can tell what emotions you are feeling when your mind wanders
http://www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/mind-wanders-fmri-scanning/

Knowing exactly how many would be useful for completing an in depth study into human emotions.

Then linking that information to the chemicals that cause them.

if I can just get the force of determination to configure the mind tools to do what’s needed i’m half-happy. In practice it feels like a composite* of whatever, sometimes it requires a fury of sorts to summon and maintain the effort required.

*just in the minute or so I wrote this it was quite an interesting effort, because i’ve got three thiings on the go, and a few hundred things i’m thinking about.

Indeed, humans have all known emotions.

Only because they are the only ones he/she knows. A dog also thinks it knows all known emotions, but obviously does not otherwise it would be human. In other words you only know the known.

Let’s put it this way:

Can we test how many emotions a human has?

If so, how? And then, do that test.

If not, then the question is worthless.

:) or the answer is, as many as you can think of if you could remember to actually record them?

I’m sure there are people approaching the subject scientifically somewhere, and making an effort to distinguish between different emotional responses. And trying to trace them to the various chemical processes and external stimuli involved.

Yes, a scientific approach wouldn’t be concerned with preserving the traditional names, but linking tem with what’s actually going on.

it achieves a lot for science

yes emotions can intermingle and have scales

emotions change all the time, over 24 hours each person experiences a range of emotions

say eventually when all emotions are understood

fMRI scans plot areas in the brain for each emotion and cross-emotions

then when emotions to chemical relationships are understood

a smart device would detect certain chemicals in the body which generate specific emotions and create an emotion chart across a person’s whole day

such information would be handy to carers, doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists to treat people with depression

Military uses could be found

A soldier experiencing intense fear could be medicated on the fly with counter-chemicals
this would be a voluntary tool the soldier could choose to use on the field

I wonder if the fantasy superhuman, the fantasy supersoldier, the _chemically-enhanced supersoldier_* is entirely an ideological thing, you know from watching Rambo or whatever. I doubt it could be entirely ideological, though’s keenly absorbed and amplified.

*it’s interesting that the neuro-chem’-centric model of the mind seems to be amongst it. There’s this terrritory of chemical enhancement, which I can’t help thinking promotes drug use (medicines, and not).

you could spin it around

internal environment (that needs maintaining – homeostasis) > reaction potentials > process (including higher functions) > sense perceptions > input/output to external environment.

(the above not to be taken too literally, my only point being it probably works both ways)

how exactly the term environment came to mean that external only or mostly i’ve never quite fully grasped. How ever it did, whatever were responsible for that’s quite nasty IMO.
