These Deep Space Images Reveal A New Type Of Galaxy

Hubble’s deep field images have provided the farthest glimpses we’ve ever had of galaxies in spaces. Combining those images with a new telescope view has revealed that there are even more galaxies there than we knew — including a mysterious, new type of galaxy.

But…what type of new galaxy?

The new type of galaxy is, well, I’m tempted to call it an “old-young galaxy”. It’s young in that it occurred very early in the history of the universe, but old in that it has no new star formation. Think of it as a galaxy that died young.

More technically, these are “cold gas galaxies” where the gas within the galaxy holds no newly forming hot stars.

I could speculate about their origin or fate. For instrance, could these be the progenitors of globular clusters? Could these newly discovered galaxies contain more dark matter? or less?
