no pictures?

I’d say one of two main possibilities it could be a fungus due to wetter season(maybe). It could be sucking insects.

Would be easier if you took some pictures .. cut one open and photographed that too.. more info please./

from that link above

Why are fruit dropping off my vine?

There are three possible reasons for fruit dropping off vines:

* irregular watering in which the vines at times get insufficient water * fungal diseases * fruit fly and severe mite damage, particularly with young fruit.

I reckon irregular watering could be the problem here…

Boron deficiency? Giving a feed of trace elements will often help. Plenty of potassium will also help with flavour. Probably make sure the vine has plenty of water at flowering time & regular complete fertilizer.
Well this is more or less the answer Colin Campbell regularly gives on radio 4BC Brisbanes gardening talback show, for the same questions. :)
Good luck!

I was also wondering, before I do any planting, can I plant 2 different varieties close together?
Or is that a big no no?

Only if you are going to use the seed should it really matter.
