Police body cameras can dramatically reduce the number of complaints against officers, research suggests. The Cambridge University study showed complaints by members of the public against officers fell by 93% over 12 months compared with the year before. Almost 2,000 officers across four UK forces and two US police departments were monitored for the project. Dr Barak Ariel, who led the research, said no other policing measure had led to such “radical” changes. The study aimed to find out if the use of cameras, which are usually clipped to the top half of an officer’s uniform, affected complaints against police made by the public.

I suppose it has a repressive thing about it, you know like they have the gadget running, you could end up on facebook, or TV, always handy that potential adverse attention, being entertainment, the media and all.

it works both ways I think

Officers that have a camera would be more likely to follow procedure

It would be interesting if all US police were to have body cameras and see if police shootings drop

Police bashing would drop too

That’s incredible. My only complaint about police officers (not one that I put in writing) was one where they went to the wrong address, then on second call dismissed a person who had hacked down a neighbours door with an axe with just a warning. Then that person went on to brutally murder that neighbour. Police had two chances to stop it in advance, and fluffed both of them. I don’t see how the presence of body cameras would stop a complaint like that.

but if the neighbor had a video cam at the front door, of a crazed person hacking the door with an axe

that would be a powerful motivator for the police to act upon

The emotions displayed by the axe man would be enough to motivate the police I think

That visual information is not carried over by talking about it.

and if the neighbour had a gun, the crazed person would be dead before they could attack…

probably get the same effect if they wandered around looking nosy and scribbling notes in their notepad constantly, it’s a near-comparable insanity, that’s come to be normal.
