can’t see a tomato thread on the topic page most near…so time to start another.
i planted seeds late, and only now are only some of my tomatoes starting to fruit. i passed the thrip borne virus stage unscathed, and hopefully shouldn’t have any problems with tomato dieback due to virus.
as usual, it’s difficult to keep up with tying the plants up to the stakes at the right time, and to trim the numerous side shoots (which turn into full blown branches.) a vegie gardening neighbor (a few streets away) gave me a cutting off his clumping bamboo. hope to grow it into a clump that will provide (free) tall stakes for toms etc. btw that same neighbor showed me a cool lebanese tool for tilling the soil. it’s pretty much like a heavy mattock, with a heavy fork (bent 90 degrees) at the end. sure beats a standard fork for aerating/digging any sizable plot.

Pruning toms is the choice of the gardener.. but also this relates to choice of type.

Bush type toms don’t really care how many branches you allow.

What I have proven is that tomatoes are the canaries of the garden world .. put roundup near them and the toms will gather it up somehow.

Late plantings also are the gardeners choice.. I make severalplantings during the season but I save things like Brandywines till last as it is a waste of time growing them earlier on. This is a variety which does require pruning and staking.
