Must admit I know nothing about this class of digital creativity. I’ll be doing internet study of the subject of course, but just wondering if anyone here has recommendations of cheap/free software for those getting started.

I’m all ears.
I think Skiptic Peat has a set up.

Perhaps we need to clarify a few things first. I’ve used “Windows Movie Maker” to edit videoed movies by changing the scenes around, cutting and pasting, adding sound, adding stills, to make a couple of videos including a rather good wedding video. I take it that that’s not what you’re talking about.
I’ve had a look through the Wikipedia entries on 2-D and 3-D animation without coming to any conclusions. It may depend on what you want to do with it.

Google brings up these websites to help you choose:

Adobe Premier Pro, it’s not cheap or free but it’s great and has plenty of online tutorials to help you do stuff.
Ha the last thing I learned in this field was Flash Animation which is a bit out of date now

Flash is as dated as HomeStarRunner. I always pictured you as a StrongSad.

Your post was a cry for help
There is a cut down version of Adobe Premier

Ta for contributions so far, I’ll be back to this thread tomorrow.

They just seem to be rehashes of the free Windows Movie Maker with a few extra tweaks like haze removal.
Hold on, the specs for both say “animation tools”. What animation tools?
I see, simple moving of drawing objects in 2-D.

Actually, that simple drawing object animation may be just what I need for making a video about the different types of infinity.
I’m not sure if it would suffice for animating my geometries in 4-D, but it may suffice even then with a bit of judicious precalculation.
Your specifications are a bit vague: you haven’t actually said what you want to do. To capture video from a camera, then edit it to produce something like a movie to post on youtube, I’ve used cinelerra; it’s a full-featured video production suite that’s free and open-source, but only runs on Linux (but have a look at its wikipedia page).
I’ve also made animated movies from a sequence of still images with blender, a good general-purpose 3D modeller and animator.
As an aside I wrote a 4D animation package a few years ago that represented the location of each pixel as a quaternion. Transforms were simple, but it used a lot of memory (the machine I built it on had 192GB of RAM.)

Don’t know what happened there; it looked right in preview.

I’m looking to create videos to accompany my music, which would be a combination of edited camera footage, still images etc.

Wow, nice!

Blender is supposed to be one of the best of the free ones.

Then the free Windows Movie Maker suffices. You can fade music in and out and easily reposition it in time relative to imported video and still images.
Movie Maker 2012 is included in the Windows Essentials 2012 program suite.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14220/windows-movie-maker-download
Download before January 10, 2017 because on that date Microsoft is pulling the plug on the free download.
I, too, an interested in creating videos to accompany my music. I have many hours of recorded music that mrs mollwollfumble has composed.
