Aerovelo, a Canadian firm focused on human-powered technologies, has broken the standing world record with its latest invention – a bike shaped like a bullet that can go as fast as a car on a highway.

After breaking and setting successive new records over the week, on 19 September, the Aerovelo Eta speed bike succeeded in achieving the record breaking speed of 89.59mph (144.18 km/hr) at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge held in Battle Mountain, Nevada, on Highway 305, which is the straightest, flattest and smoothest road surface in the world.

Was it paced with a powered vehicle?

Next step would be a solar/electric motor version for uphill assistance

In the 50s Morris broke a significant record with a special vehicle.
In one form it did 100mpg & in another it did 100mph. It sold for £100

“ The bike only requires 198 watts of pedal power at 90km/hr, which is equivalent to the same amount of power you’d need to keep three light bulbs illuminated.”

Yeah, but what is that in Olympic size swimming pools?

Seems reasonable:
A trained cyclist can produce about 400 watts of mechanical power for an hour or more, but adults of good average fitness average between 50 and 150 watts for an hour of vigorous exercise. A healthy well-fed laborer over the course of an 8-hour work shift can sustain an average output of about 75 watts.

The new standard in light globes should be around 15W, since we’re all switching to compact floros or LEDs.

Mmm. I think this comparison aids no one.

They’ve made it as light as possible so I suspect if anything goes wrong, the rider is dead.

There are two ways to think about this. A feather is not hurt if hit by a truck. Similarly, it would be counterproductive and dangerous to insist that all motorcycle riders wear seatbelts. In this case, the vehicle would protect the rider in much the same way that leather motorcycle gear does.

It’s not intended to be a practical vehicle in a transport sense. It’s just a speed record vehicle.
