Château de Rule has a ‘smart’ metre on the electricity. Is it cheaper for me to run the major appliances at night?

Supposedly so, my in-laws have one and do that but the inconvenience may outweigh the cheaper electricity.

Dunno.
Do the experiment – run everything during peak times for a quarter then do the same at off peak times for a quarter…

And if it fails use C4
Check your bill to see whether there is a tariff change at any particular time.
When the smart meters first came out they were spruiked as saving people money as they could better manage their energy use. What happened some peoples bills went up by a fair bit, in their plans the company had made assumptions based on average use for off peak, the meters instead accurately recorded lots of peak usage.
Check the bill! GENIUS!
Peak: 0700-2300 M-F: 23.7c/kWh
Off Peak: other times: 10.3 c/kWh
Single rate: any time: 17.9 c/kWh

Me too, not only does it dry them but it disinfects them with the UV. I also use wind power. And there has been a lot of that lately.
The nuclear fusion makes that too…

I guess so. But it’s useful for ironing out wrinkles, as long as you peg carefully.
Nothing like the smell and feel of clean sundried white cotton sheets.
Three hours eighteen minutes from first mention of using electricity to dry clothes to the first post about using the sun. That’s gotta be an Internet record.

Vox Pop, if I may: What type of electricity plan are you on? ‘Single rate’ or ‘Peak / off peak’?
No idea. SWMBO arranged it, and I’ve never bothered to check.

Same same, until today. And just between you and me, that was probably an expensive mistake.
;-/
The most expensive one, you can’t scrimp on quality…

Single rate.
single person household, work full time hours. My peak electricity usage is during peak times. Would mean paying extra for someone like me.
I’ve never owned a dryer in my whole adult life
but this plan wouldn’t work for us.. I am supposed to turn everything on after peak times? hooly, I refuse to do chores after 7.30pm

Me neither, but I plan to soon.
Of the old days, it was probably not uncommon to adjust the j tariff clock, like they stopped when the power goes out and get all wrong. Cuntry people knew those lead thingies on the wire on the face screws of the clock were so the screws didn’t vibrate out in thunderstorms.
I’ve never heard of it done, but I suppose with an unreliable J tarrif clock one could put a power point on the HWS to test if it’s got power at the HWS to save wandering out to the switchboard/meter box.
don’t use enough power to worry about it. avg about 5kWh per diem.

Our dryer / washing machine / dishwasher / oven all have ‘delay start’ features that facilitate off-peak use.

Off-peak also applies all weekend.

Condensers are the answer, but you need a drain to plumb them to unless you want to keep emptying the collector tank.

Noice. Here, that noise would interfere a bit with either TV viewing or sleep.
Don’t have a dishwasher, wouldn’t fit in our kitchen.

Probably simplest to just obtain a schedule of tariffs from your provider

we have a timer on our washing machine and dryer…
For external (or internal) air drying of clothes the most important and most overlooked factor is the relative humidity of the air.
lot of people think like warm air is going to be a whole quicker at defroster freezers, but I always found just a fan does the job
on the subject drying clothes, when mum (just a little girl in London) her mum’d bring the clothes in from outdoors to defrost them, they’s freeze solid on the line

Yes just a fan, no heating required.
Ya, moving air is the key.
