I discourage the wife from shaking the orange juice, like when she gets it out of the fridge

My opinion is mixing air with it and further breaking it up (that settled out too) makes it lose whatever it is that makes it taste yummy.

Does shaking orange juice make it degrade quicker somehow?

Without shaking lots of the tasty pulp is stuck down the bottom.

maybe there is a happy medium where she could gently turn the bottle around, thus mixing the pulp without creating bubbles…

Gravity causes all the heaver bits settle down the bottom leaving lighter particles at the top

I think the process has name, cannot recall it

Gravity separation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_separation

Gravity separation is an industrial method of separating two components, either a suspension, or dry granular mixture where separating the components with gravity is sufficiently practical: i.e. the components of the mixture have different specific weight.

there is little doubt that aerating it will increase oxidation, but the question is, does that have a noticeable effect on taste over the time the juice is good for?

I would suggest not…

yeah that’s part of what I suggested to the lady, increased oxidation. The other part’s the sensation of the juice, the larger matter that resembles the orange.

I always shake orange juice. But then we don’t buy large quantities, we only drink orange juice occasionally. And for the record, they shake the juice at the pub.

juice doesn’t have a long shelf life, so I suspect that there is little difference in taste.

Also if you are doing taste science you need to make sure you palette is prepped the same at each tasting

well i’m not, I am drinking it in contradiction to the instructions on the label! (excepting the initial light shake and upsidedowny when first opened)

The entire discussion is irrelevant to me. I don’t like & never drink orange juice.

wife finds it acidic upsets her tummy, so waters it down. Me I can drink’t straight by the litre/day, which often crave toward end of a flu or cold, you know, keeping the scurvy at bay.

I don’t understand the obsession with orange juice when there are so many other less acidic juices available.
