Subject: Rural internet

Again, I’ve put this in FFFS tech, but anyone here want to comment?

Recently in Casterton if I use my dongle/wingle the Tokyo3 forums become unavailable. The message says takes too long to respond. However, if I open up my old dialup account (which still has a few hours on it) the forums work, albeit a bit slowly. My tech friend is not in a good mood today and is angry with me for not using a laptop or phone. He has, however, updated the Firefox browser for me on that CPU and made it the default browser. Previously it was set for Explorer as default and as it is running on XP that cannot be updated.

It’s an old computer, just used very occasionally for writing letters and quickly checking the Tokyo3 forums, here, ABC JustIn and the emergency sites. Although the emergency sites are becoming a bit bells and whistles now too.

Maybe fixing the browser will solve the problem. I won’t know until I take the CPU back there in a couple of weeks and try it out. I also have reservations about the wireless network in Casterton, which seems to suffer from a bandwidth problem quite frequently.

They got updated to 4G towers not that long ago. And the dongle is 4G. And it did work. I don’t think this dates from any particular tower changes.

3g will still be available. you should be able to go into the modem settings via the URL (a number, mine looks like this http://192.168.0.1 ) that is supplied by your ISP.

Unfortunately, if your old computer had delete from server then everything you read on that computer will still be on the computer but not on the server. If your smartphone had keep on server then it will only be able to read the messages since you set it up.

does the 4g dongle come with drivers for window xp?

I dont think they suport XP anymore

if your running xp you will not have a 4g modem driver

so the need to support the OS to windows 7 or higher which do

these are external modems. the drivers for them come included. they connect to the computer via wifi, so as long as you puta has wifi they will work. they also connect via usb cable.

the modem doesn’t rely on what operating system your computer uses. as long as it has wifi the modem will work. I have one. my computer doesn’t have wifi so i use an external wifi dongle. i am posting here via that. it works.

The USB dongle I got from Office Works, 19 bucks on special, will use the best available band 4g, H or 3G.
It has two antenna ports.
It might be an idea to get an antenna, Buffy.

Is this dongle wireless? Could the problem be with the wireless standard? e.g. B, G, N, AC? I would imagine to get the most out of a 4G modem, the wireless connection to the computer would be on the high side i.e AC or maybe N. Is the WiFi on the computer being used compatible with these standards?

Thanks for the replies.

>>these are external modems. the drivers for them come included. they connect to the computer via wifi, so as long as you puta has wifi they will work. they also connect via usb cable.<<

I plug the thing into a USB port. Like this:

>>the modem doesn’t rely on what operating system your computer uses. as long as it has wifi the modem will work. I have one. my computer doesn’t have wifi so i use an external wifi dongle. i am posting here via that. it works.<<

When I got it as part of the bundle when Mr buffy joined us up to NBN here in Penshurst, I took it to Hamilton, plugged it in, and all the installation stuff happened and it works there. Then I took the dongle to Casterton, plugged it in, and all the installation stuff happened and it worked there. Sometimes slowly, but I’ve pretty much convinced myself that is a bandwidth problem. I’ve also used the dongle with the laptop when we have been at the RACV Club in Bourke Street in Melbourne. Things get slow on a Saturday night after about 10.00pm in the middle of the city.

The last two times I’ve stayed over at Casterton to do gardening, I’ve had to resort to my old dialup. Prior to that the thing was working. As I said above, I was getting a message that Explorer was out of date (which I knew) and I should change browsers. So hopefully the Firefox update will solve things.

If none of this works, I’ll contact Telstra and see if there is a problem with service in Casterton.
